Personally I think Match Play is an exciting format for golf. Certainly not something I would want to see every week, but it adds a great amount of drama to the game. To me it is like watching a play off at the end of a tournament. I love the fact that the players can take more risks because it is after all only one hole. In stroke play the players have to keep in mind that they have to play within themselves and protect against a big number. We keep hearing the term "be patient". In Match play, patience is not always rewarded as by the time your opportunity comes up, the match may already be too far gone. Looking forward to some exciting golf this week :)

    Are you a Fan ?

    Hi Darius!
I don't mind Match Play when I'm playing someone of equal skill and handicap, it's when I play a 16 handicap and he plays to 4 is where I have trouble.

    How right you are Guy...
I am sure that many of us have tales of woe we could tell about matches played against some we would refer to as the proverbial "Sandbagger".
I don't know how some people can be proud of a win under those circumstances. I know that every now and again some have that magic round and I applaud that, but we have some at our course that are notorious for that in match play to the point that a lot of guys just won't sign up anymore because of it.

Definitely enjoying it. Interesting to see strategic differences and situational aggressiveness changes from stroke play. Also like the larger chunks of airtime for some of the lower seeds and Euro Tour guys that don't always get featured group time most weeks. And who knows, maybe I'll learn something for when our club championship rolls around.

I agree that Match Play is a nice change after a steady diet of stroke play. I find that there is a shift in the approach to risk/reward on each hole in match play vs stroke play that affects the strategy a player uses. A player might take on that water hazard in Match play where he would play safe in stroke play.

Sadly the Club I am at now does not have a Match play event and I rather miss it.

    Hi Darius,

I agree about the Match Play format. I really do enjoy it so much better than regular medal/stroke play. I think that it encourages more drama by the fact that players will have to generate scoring opportunities to stay in a match or to prolong a match, etc.

I used to participate in our Men's Club Championship annually and it was a good format (Match Play). We used to have several flights to accommodate the various handicaps so as to minimize the sandbagging. And, of course, being a smaller club meant that the Men's Club/ Club Pros could also monitor the pairings and the handicaps! They even established an "appeals" committee if someone thought that a player was sandbagging!

The furthest that I ever made it was to the finals one year in my flight, but I just ran out of gas and the other player was playing really well! But it is an experience that I would not trade!

I love match play. I have a weekly match I play with a friend. We do keep score of course but our game is just straight up match play hole by hole. He's a 3 and I'm a 5 but we play with no strokes. You're always in a match so there's always that chance to come back when you're down (except when you're dormi of course)....
