What's your preference for your iron shafts ?

Do you prefer graphite or steel for your iron shafts ?

Personally, I have had never played steel shafts since I started playing golf on a more serious level. My first set of clubs were steel shafts but that was when I only played the odd 9 hole round with the gang at work or in the odd scramble tournament. Once I caught the bug, I purchased a set of irons with graphite shafts and have never looked back. I know that everyone has a preference and likely a good reason for their choice. I am interested in why one chooses one option over another. Given I have not used steel shafts for over 20 years now, I can't say that I don't like steel, it is just that I am so used to my custom fitted graphite shafts I simply cannot see me using something else. My AP1's with the Tour AD 65i shafts comfortably give me the launch and spin rates that allow me to hit the kind of shots I like. How about you ?

    Hey Darius,
I have never owned a set of irons that had graphite shafts. My current AP2's are set up with KBS Tour Stiff shafts (custom order), and my previous AP1's were Dynamic Gold S300. I have never tried irons in graphite. It might be interesting to hit a few with the graphite shafts to compare.

Nice topic Darius a...I remember when graphite shafts for irons were becoming more mainstream and the amount of conversation around the coffee table at the clubhouse of steel vs. graphite.

Personally, I grew up with steel since I was a kid and have played steel ever since -- I like the steel shafts, especially since they have developed so much in the past 25 years or so with the lightweight shafts, different flexes and launch points, etc.

I personally play with the KBS Tour shafts (steel) in my irons, but with a regular flex. I went for a fitting last month for possible new irons and wedges and I really liked the new DG AMT shafts -- of course in my regular flex and not the stiff or x-stiff flex. There will be a day in the future though that I know I will probably have to make a switch to graphite.

    Darius-
Personally I'm in the opposite boat. Used steel since the very first set of irons that I've owned. Not sure really what it is about the shafts themselves that I like so much. I guess it's just the "boardy" or rigid feel that I like to hit a whole bunch of different shots. Would be really interested to try a graphite shaft comparable to a True Temper Dynamic Gold S300 though. What are fellow TTer's thoughts?

My go to shaft has always been KBS Tour-Stiff (120g). Over the last couple of years I have developed serious tendinitis in both elbows so I played a season with i95 Steelfibers in some 714 CBs (many consider these to be the graphite shaft that is closest to steel in terms of feel). Amazing shafts, definitely easier on the elbows but my accuracy suffered with the lighter weights. This season I went back to steel, but a touch lighter (110g KBS Tour-Vs), My accuracy is back and my index has never been lower. I see a day where I will have to go lighter again, but for now steel is where it is at for me!
PS: I tried the 110g Steelfiber but they didn't perform like the KBS for me.

Interesting... I've been tempted to go with a lighter shaft myself. Maybe a KBS C-Taper Lite or even some of those steelfiber shafts. I've heard they work wonders!
