For some reason I recall 3 Titleist levels, red name and number were low compression, black name with red number was the ball 90% of us played and the black and black was the high compression ball for pros and real good amateurs.

I was going through some boxes of old golf stuff a few months ago, stuff like my old scorecard collection and some pictures, and I came across an old Club Special in perfect condition. The cover had yellowed some and letting it bounce off my tile floor, it was dead, but I keep it on my desk for fun now. Whoever heard of a brand new Club Special these days and times?

There was a ball at the time that just said Acushnet and had a number on it. Could that be what you are thinking of?

I have two dozen of the club special balls still in the box. Anyone know the value buy chance? All Black letters and numbers.

I worked in the Pro Shop at our country club as an asst. professional at the time. I remember ordering and selling this popular ball on a regular basis. The mid priced ball was the Acushnet Pinnicle. It was a great ball for players who shot in the high 80's and 90's. I believe the name was used again by Acushnet for a better ball that many of my fellow golfers used.

I just purchased 2 sleeves of unopened 1960ish Acushnet Titleist black golf balls with red numbers on them. They are in near mint condition with the original box. I told the lady at the thrift store to hang on to them but she refused to. So, for $10, yes I said $10 I'm pretty sure that  I gotta great deal.

The golf ball you are talking about had six (6) X's on it...I believe this was a Titleist reject. Back in 1966 (when I started playing golf) this is what most of us beginners used...Titleist and no other manufacturer put X-OUT on the balls as they do today...
