Does the color of the number on the golf ball have any significance?

  1. Does the color of the numeral on the golf ball indicate any specific feature of the ball, i.e. spin rate, compression, etc.

On Pro Vs a red number indicates a Pro V1x and a black number indicates a Pro V1. No need to look closely at the small type within the alignment arrows to read which ProV model it is, though the various design of those alignment arrows will give you insight as to which iteration of those models it is. (2015, 2013, 2012, etc.)

Also, the boldness (or lack thereof) of the number will quickly tell you whether it is a Pro V or a different Titleist model. The numeral on a Pro V is printed finer than say, an NXT Tour, where the numeral is obviously printed a bit bolder.

Great Question. Years ago I was told it was related to compression. Black 100 Red 90. But now days I would like to know also. The Prov1 is black and the Prov1x is red.

When Titleist made the Balata ball, I believe that the 100 was black and 90 was red and that the compression was printed on the ball. You probably can research ball discussions on this site and go waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back and find pictures and further discussion on this subject. Compression is not a factor in todays golf ball market, to my knowledge. What say yeah, Titleist?

Hey Chuck, ... I think you are correct. If my memory serves me correct, back in the day, the colour of the number coincided with the compression.

Regarding compression as a factor in today's golf balls, I came across a little video vignette from Titleist -- I cannot remember where it is, but it explicitly dealt with golf ball compression, swing speed etc. and how or if it plays a factor in choosing a ball to best fit one's game.

Perhaps one of the Titleist staff can post with another link to the video/article.

    Hi everyone -

This is a great topic! As Doug said, the Pro V1 has black numerals while the Pro V1x has red numerals.

As for the video Dino was talking about, head on over to our golf ball fitting page for more information. Many golfers are led to believe they should be fit for a golf ball based solely on their driver swing speed. This is a flawed approach. The truth is golfers use a wide range of swing speeds to execute the vast array of shots required in every round. The golf ball must perform with every club, at every speed, on every shot.

Here is the link to the video about swing speed: www.youtube.com/watch

    Thanks everyone!

Thanks for the link and info Abby!
  8. I found a Pro V1 with a red number. Is this rare or not?

Would seem, Prov1s normally have black numbers and Prov1x have red numbers.
