  1. Going through an old "shag bag" in my garage a few weeks ago, I came across nearly 3 dozen used Balata balls in various conditions...this got me thinking...

A few guys at my club and I are going to be having an "old Blades and Balatas" tournament one Sunday afternoon in September! Requirements are blade irons from earlier than 1990, and balata golf balls. (To keep it a bit easier, we'll stick with iron's only and no Persimmon woods.)

I did a trial run this past Sunday, playing with my Wilson Staff Tour Blade FG-17's from the early 80's and Titleist Tour Balata 90's. Amazingly, I shot an 81 and used the same ball all day! What a blast...I'd forgotten just how good that ball feels when well struck...and of course off the putter face!

I remember those days! You could really create some spin with those balata balls.I had a set of Willson Staffs from the late 70's that had that red rubber plug at the bottom of the hosel.

    Wish I still had them.

I still have a couple dozen Professional 100 new condition. Nothing felt better than Balata and my Titleist Tour Model circa 1978.

FG-17s. My very first set of golf clubs in 1984. Knew nothing about the game but had heard so much about those clubs, had to have them. The pro at Edwin Watts told me that they were not for a beginner but, hardheaded me, I had to have them. Boy was he right. Do not remember playing with the Balata balls, because at my level, I cut the balls because of my ability. Never learned to hit them very well and eventually sold them. That was a smart move. Have fun with the tournament. Surprised the balls have held up so well.
  5. I’ve tried playing with an old balata a few times and it always ends up coming apart internally, unfortunately. I miss the feel of playing a balata.

I still have my Cleveland Classic persimmon driver and 3 wood as well as my miz MP 33 blades, but, no balata balls. The balata's were certainly "cuttable". At the time I would never have guessed the transformation golf equipment has gone through. Titleist is the only way to go today!
