You didn't say what price range. So why not go with the best. Scotty Cameron series putters.

I just got the new California Monterrey putter a few weeks ago. It's the best putter I've ever owned. It looks great, and very smooth feeling.

Also the new New Port 2 series are really nice too.

I've tried them all, Cameron's feel the best. They also have a great look. The New Odysseys Pro types are nice too. Find one that you like and that feels good and make sure to get fitted for it. That's the most important part. I personally do fittings and it truely affects how the putter will perform for you. Make sure the length, lie angle and loft is right for you. The rest if feel.

It really depends on your preferences. Every golfer has an idea in their mind, whether they actually think about it or not, on what putter looks good to them at address. For instance, as much as I love the look overall of a Scotty Cameron Studio Newport 2, I can't putt with it because it does not look good to me at address. I can't stand the plumber's neck at all, and have to putt with a flow neck.  Also, I am not one that likes the look of a mallet, so putt with a blade-type putter. In my mind, the thinner the putter, like a Napa, the better. (Too bad I can't afford a S.C. Napa right now!) It is just something that is all in my head, but translates to the actual putts. If there is any part of the game that is more in your head and confidence in what equipment you use, putting is the most prevalent, in my mind! To answer the first part of your question, I don't think you can go wrong with a Scotty Cameron. In my opinion, all of his putters make the ball feel great off the face and they roll the ball pure, but you can differ with the removable weights in the bottoms of certain models. (Some like a heavier head, some a lighter head- Scotty makes weights in 5g, 10g, 15g, and I believe 20g increments, so you could always mess around with those, too! If my facts are wrong on these weights, someone please correct me!) The fun part about shopping for a putter is that it is the most personal club in the bag, so you have to choose one that fits your preferences, in both feel and looks. Matching these two aspects to your gamer putter will help you make more putts. (Oh yeah, and time on the practice green doesn't hurt, either!)  Good luck with the search, and please post back with what you end up gaming- would love to hear what you go with!

Not easy to answer a question about the most individualized and personalized club in the bag.  One reliable piece of information is most golfers will select the most appropriate putter based on visual appeal and feel.  You likely will have an opinion that your putting needs help either by a shape that supports your swing characteristics or it's time to look at fixed placement putters.  Shaft selection for a driver is a science with some art, putter selection is an art backed up by some science of the swing.

I've avoided the top of the range putters, figuring I can make a used $50 putter do my bidding, but there is a Cameron Sonoma calling me that at least on the store mat like it makes putting so much easier than the full mallets I've been using.  Some think a better solution for someone my age is a belly putter, but I'd still no more get one as Captain Ahab would use a rocket-propelled grenade to get Moby Dick.  To each their own.
