Here is a question for Titleist Technical Staff.

I have been struggling with my driver. I was hitting the middle of the club, but the ball just wasn't carrying. At first, I attributed it to age. But, I still hit my 7 iron 155. At 10.5 degrees the driver should be flying better. The club felt head heavy to me so I took it into the Pro to check the swing weight. I was stunned to find out that it is D5!

With my swing speed of 95+/-, I am confident that this is a problem. I was fit for this driver by an Advanced Titleist fitter(unfortunately the Pro has left). I have never changed it from factory settings. My setup:

    - Mitsubishi Bassara Stiff 50G - Alternate shaft Fujikura Speeder Stiff 65 - Multil-compound Golf Pride - 10.5 910

My question is if I should have weight added to the butt end of the shaft or should I try to find a lighter weight insert for the head? I assume I should take it to D 0 or 1.

I am thinking that this change will make it easier for me to swing faster, unload and release the club, resulting in a higher farther ball flight.

    Does this make sense?

  2. Not a real fan of the Bassara shaft. Has a real soft tip. Like the Speeder.
Changing the weight is the way to go. Try taking it to D1 and see how feels. You can always go to D0.
Also recommend you find another Titleist fitting event and have a Product Specialist work with you. That's what we're here for!

what about shortening the shaft and increasing loft? i would first try to increase loft and maybe choke up on the range. if you are able to, decrease the screw weight in the head and see if it helps. then see if another fitter recommends butt trimming the shaft to your specs. for the longest time i was hitting a 45" driver. when i cut it down to 44.25" it felt so much smoother. i also have heavier head weights to experiment with. good luck.

Hi Steve, If you have a 915 driver, the Bassara with a Multicompound grip should build out at about a D2-D3 swingweight with a 9 gr red weight. If you switch to a Speeder EVO TS 661 with the same grip at std length, it will build out 1 swingweight heavier due to the different balance point of that shaft. A white 4 gram weight will bring that swingweight down about 2-3 points and a standard 50 gram grip will lower that another 1/2-1 swingweight. The 915 weights are still available and your pro should be able to order that for you.

Well, I got it done to D1. Shortened shaft, replaced multi-compound with GP Tour Velvet and moved to D4 setting (adding .75 degrees loft). All good!!

    Hi Cathi,

I have a 915 D2 9.5, with a Diamana Red M+ 50, Lite shaft and a GP Tour Velvet standard grip. I want to cut it down to 44". It has a red weight,(9gr?). Would you advise that I go with a multi compound grip (37gr ?).

    Thank you, Cathi

Hi Jam, Your current swingweight is about D1 - if you cut it down 1", it will bring it down to C5 or so. We would recommend not only the lighter grip, but maybe a heavier bezel weight as well depending on the final swingweight you are trying to achieve.

    Hi Cathi,

It's me again. Thank you for the info regarding the bezel weight. This is unfamiliar territory for me. What bezel weight and grip weight would you suggest to retain the swing weight at D1 or D2?

This is the last inquiry on this subject.

    Thanks again, Cathi

Is it possible to find 910 swing weight kit? Need something less than 7g.

Hi Jam, You can get the 14gr (black) weight for the 915 driver and that will bring it back to about a C8 swingweight or just leave your red weight in there and put a 25gr grip on it and that will bring the swingweight to about a D0-D1. That might be the easiest route.

You are the best, Cathi! I will move forward retaining the red weight and putting a 25g grip on my 915 D2 driver.

    Have a great week.

  12. You can take a 1/4" off; remove grip and a few pieces add lead tape; or add a mid-size grip. Each of these can influence it 2-4 SWs. I've used each successfully.

If you have 95 mph swingspeed, why are you using stiff shaft?
