So I recently decided to build a set of single length irons with my 712mb heads. I put an 8 iron shaft in each head and used lead tape or a drill to get the head weights to all be close to 265 grams. I also had all the lie angles bent to 66*. I have really enjoyed the simplicity of the set up. I have not lost much distance in the long irons, maybe around 5 yards, but I am not a long hitter anyway. Wondering if anyone had tried to do the same and how things worked out for you.

Yes... A few years ago I had a fitting at Manchester Lane.. When i met the fitter, i mentioned the single length shaft for all my irons.. He said ok, we'll try it out but let's hit some balls first and warm up.. I was getting fitted for the 716 AP irons. So started hitting some balls to get numbers on the trackman.. After a while he kept changing shafts on me to get the best numbers.. I was hitting a 7 iron at the time... Then he handed me a 5 iron and not thinking about anything I started swinging and getting numbers.. He handed me another 5 iron w/ a different shaft, again, not thinking about it, swinging away and getting numbers but wasn't good.. Thought maybe it was a different type/model.. He came over and asked me if i noticed anything different.. I told him yeah, the shaft isn't for me, not a good model.. He asked, did you notice the length between the 2. And i started laughing and forgot i had mentioned that.. He put an 8 iron shaft on the 5 head second time around.. Sure enough we looked at the numbers.. The first 5 iron i hit, got good numbers, the second one, not so much.

That was my experience... Single length doesn't work for me and went with the recommendation the fitter made for me...

    Speedy,
Thank you so much for your experience. One quick question, do you know if the 5 iron head was weighted the same as the 7 iron head? Just wondering if that would make a difference.

I'll be honest with you Kip I really couldn't tell the difference.. My mind was on making good shots w/ a good setup, posture, etc. I really wasn't thinking about the set up other then the fact he gave me a different shaft.. It was interesting how he threw it in there without telling me.. I liked that he did that...

It wasn't a big thing for me to have the single length irons, just wanted to try it out... I'm sure if i was really into it, I would've done what you did and change the weights, etc...

How long have you been playing with your setup?

I have only been playing with these for about a month. I really think that I do not create enough club head speed in the long irons to make it work. The four and five irons fly very low, and so I am really unable to get a precise distance with those irons.

It's my understanding that due to the same length, you lose the lever advantage on long irons and gain some on short irons. So the loft and lie all need some correction. As you note, the weight is another factor. If I was going to try these, I'd want to go to a fitter with experience with sets designed for that use. That leaves me out - hard enough to find LH clubs w/o going to single-length as well.

Since you built the set yourself, glad they work for you. If the concept catches on, then OEM companies like Titleist will figure out the best way to build them and I can try theirs.
  7. What is everyone’s opinion on the one length irons? I think the idea is innovative but wondering if anyone out there has tried these yet and results if you have.

I "owned" a set of gently used Cobra single length for one trip to the driving range. I'll compare it to the anchored putter. They may work out well with enough perseverance and a good fitter with the right equipment. But clearly out of the box I missed the club head feel with a shorter shaft for short irons, Just me.
