AP2 vs. MB

    Hey guys! I just wanted to have a quick discussion about some irons. I am currently gaming 716 MB’s but here recently I’ve considered going to AP2’s. Reason being and this is gonna be an obvious one, the MB’s are not very addictive forgiving. Don’t get me wrong and I’m not tryin to be cocky, but I consider myself a good ball striker, but at the same time I don’t hit everything perfect. Would it be worth leaving my MB’s to go to AP2’s and get that extra forgiveness or should I just stick with what I’ve got. I play a lot of tournaments and have a professional instructor and work with him regularly to keep me in check. He hasn’t ever said I might wanna downgrade or anything like that and the place I got fitted at said these would work well for me. So I’m wondering if forgiveness should be this big of a deal for me to leave my MB’s to go to the AP2’s. Thanks for the help

    Dakota, I would suggest that perhaps consider a mixed set of clubs ... your longer irons in the 718 AP2 and your short irons in your current 716 MBs. The greater forgiveness in the AP2s will be beneficial for your long irons where less than perfect strikes tend to occur. You can still rely on your MBs for the short irons and your scoring shots. Just a thought. Regardless, best regards for finding a solution that works for you!

    Also my 2 cents. Give the 718cb’s a try.
    Things are forgiving amazing and I feel more workable than AP2.

    Would definitly recommend these babies!

    I agree with Dino, the mixed set seems like a good idea. Obviously it doesn't work for everyone, but best of luck with figuring out your solution.

    going to AP2 is not downgrade....it's all about finding right fit; combination of feel; forgiveness; and what u r comfortable playing and looking at....just saying

    I’m coming from 710 MB/CB combo set that I’ve had for the last 6yrs to 716 AP2. I didn’t regret the switch at all. A little extra forgiveness in the longer clubs are totally worth it.

    In the past six months I have played in this order … 712 AP2, 718 AP3, 712 AP2, 712 MB, 712 AP2, 716 CB, 716 AP2.

    My handicap is seven (recently shot 78 with the 712 AP2) and there is a definite difference in the above clubs!

    The AP3 is ten yards longer than the AP2, but I do not like the sound, especially in the longer clubs. Scoring for me is about the same with these two clubs.

    Because I am not a scratch golfer, mis-hits happen and when they do with the MB that is a half-club short on the approach shot. On average the MB will add three strokes to my round versus the AP2.

    As expected, the CB is a bit easier to hit than the MB but pales in comparison to the AP2. I was at the range a few days ago with my laser and there is five to eight yards gain with the 716 AP2 over the 716 CB, and the feel difference is significant!

    From the MB to the CB to the AP, is that a downgrade? Of course not! As my instructors asks me, why would you want clubs in your bag that do not make the game easier?
