It would be easier to compare a hybrid to a 4-5W, since there aren't any 13.5-15 degree hybrids. Besides the 2 groups - 1 that can't hit a fairway and the other that can't hit a hybrid with the control they expect, a fairway generally has a longer shaft and the physics (longer fulcrum) are in favor of a higher ball speed, all else equal. Some people feel they make better contact with the smaller face and the apparent higher weight of a hybrid head. So it comes down to personal feel and preference. There are more 5Ws on tour than there was 5 years ago, and with some of the pros past 35, there are fewer 3 irons as well. Whatever gets you into scoring position better.
