    In a recent Team Titleist Tour Blog article, we were given the chance to take a closer look at What’s In The Bag of Patton Kizzire, after he and fellow Titleist Brand Ambassador, Brian Harman won the QBE Shootout. During our discussion with JJ Van Wezenbeeck, Director of Titleist Club Promotion on the PGA Tour, JJ talked about gapping and he noted that, 

    “The top end of the bag is an area where a lot of amateur golfers can really see some big improvement when they get properly fit.” 

    That got us wondering, what is your preferred long game gapping club to allow for the most efficient 14 clubs in your bag? Vote for your choice and be sure to share your feedback in the comments below.

    I play a 1 or 2 iron to fill the gap between my 3 wood and my long irons. My irons vary between 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, PW, SW, 52, 56, and 60 or 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, PW, SW, 52, 56, and 60. The irons selected are based on the course I play to maximize scoring potential for the layout of the holes. I choke up or let out the grip to vary distances as necessary.

    At 72 have completely changed my attitude and feel it has paid off. Work more on course management and less on distance. I love the flight and accuracy of the Titleist hybrids.

    917D2 - 11.25*
    816h1 - 16* (was playing 917F at 15.75*)
    816h1 - 19*
    818h1 - 22.50*
    716ap1 5-52w
    SM6 - 56.10 or 56.14 depending on the course
    all irons have True temper XP 105 S300 shafts +1/2 2*up

    I use my 3 and 4 hybrid. Just so much easier to hit.

    I move from a 718 T-MB 4-iron to an 818H1 hybrid set at 19°. The 818H1 has been a great club on narrow driving holes, too.

    I have a 718 TMB 4 iron and an 818 H2 3 hybrid that fit in perfectly for gapping in my long game. Great forgiveness, workability, and versatility.

    I have a TMB 3 iron and it’s the best club I’ve bought it’s my go to club when I want to get one in play. It’s a beast!

    917F2 - 16.5
    816H2 - 19
    716AP1 - 4-W (47*)
    52* & 56*

    This leaves me around 15-20 yd gaps at the top of my bag and 10-12 through my irons and wedges.

    I'm just back from a fitting session now. Between me and my local pro we have decided the I don't need a 3 wood or driving iron . I also hate hybrids so that's a no.

    I now go M4 10.5 degree (270 carry)

    TS2 21 degree (235 carry)

    718 AP2 4 iron (210 carry)

    Then through my AP2 set.

    My local courses don't really require anything between that. As I'd budgeted for a driving iron I treated myself to a Scotty Cameron also today.

    Driver/5W/2 hybrids and 6-P irons. The hybrids get used every round. Only driver and putter can also make that claim. I get 2 fittings for irons. First, irons (only 7I for LH fittings) and when the irons are in and comfortable, go back for gapping hybrids to fit the irons to 5W with 10-15 yard gaps.

    19* 818 hybrid fits nicely between my AP2 (4-9) and my 15* 917 3W.

    Tight Lies woods are the way to go.

    I use an 18 and 23 degree hybrids. Mush easier to hit than 2 and 3 irons but the hybrids are very easy to hook so have to watch out for that.

    I have used an 18 and 21 degree utility iron for years. I don't like hitting a wood off a tight Bermuda lie. The only time I hit a 3 wood is off the tee, or if I am playing in a scramble. (I know it is all mental)

    Depending on the course and conditions I’ll rotate between TMB-2 Iron and a Titleist hybrid.
    3W, 2I (17 deg), 4I or 3W, 19 Deg Hybrid, 4-I.

    My current set up has really helped with my gaps
    Driver I switch between
    917D2 9° stiff flex for those long and fairly straight courses avg carry 273

    png G 9.6° with fujikura motore Regular flex I can really work the dog legs. Avg carry 260

    3wood: set 10 16° neutral bias average carry about 240

    Hybrid 816 h2 19° A1 setting speeder motore stiff
    Avg carry 222
    716 T-Mb 3 and 4 iron 2° up
    716 ap2 5-6 1° strong 1.5° up
    716 ap2 7-pw 2° strong 1.5 up
    That is the fit/set up I've played all 2018 and has worked well. Started the season at a 18hcp
    Current hcp 7.

    I currently play a 16.5° 3W. I’m planning to get fitted for new irons in the Spring. I like my hybrids I carry currently and will likely fill the gap with a hybrid or 2. Shout out to JJ, he was my first teaching pro at Michigan State University in the early 2000’s.
