As many of you know TM and cally have been in competition over he past couple years especially in the driver industry. The main vocal point is the face of the driver. I have an idea that a company such as Titleist could adopt and make the golf world go nuts. Its called the spring face. The inside of this driver would be equipped with 3 springs. Horizontally placed behind the outside face of the driver. Upon impact the ball would compress against the face thus compressing the screws just enough that the kinetic energy coming back from the inside would propel the ball substantially further than a normal driver. Off center hits would be also compensated by the the screws for example say a ball was taken of the toe of the driver the only screws that would compress would be the end screw closet to the toe and occasionally the middle (depends how close to middle you strike). This would make the 3rd screw by the heel act as a weight and turn the face over almost like a d-type model of a driver would.

Sounds like something could break or get loose and make crazy noises. I think I would pass on that driver.

Without USGA/R&A certifcation, drivers could be amazing. With COR limits, the face can only do so much. So the focus is on larger sweet spots and optimizing weight and balance to optimize club head speed. There are companies today that will mill a face thinner that will trampoline better but won't be conforming "for cheaters". There is a GC show for closet club designers to come up with a better driver.

USGA governs the speed of the face. This would be illegal.

Sorry guys I just realized I said screws instead of springs but to clear up any confusions, there are 3 springs, NOT SCREWS. I apologize

    Well Nate

Interesting idea there but I would rather make control the club face for moving the ball left to right and right to left. Seems the springs would hinder that ability for me personally. I'm sure temperature changes would also affect the spring and face reactions.

Maybe you should major in mechanical engineering and join the design team?

One of the reasons I like Titleist drivers is they are traditional compared to others. As great as they are and as much thought and technology goes into them they are still simple compared to other brands. I really don’t care for clubs that are injected with foam, twisted faces, jail break bars, and / or sliding weights every which way. I think less is better, especially when it’s already great.
