As the title says, I am in the market for some AP2's. My question is, would you go ahead and buy the 718's now or wait a few months for the 720's to be released and see what they have to offer? From what I've read, it sounds like the 718's were a big improvement over the previous few years, so I'm wondering what Titleist could possibly do to make another large jump in performance with the 720's making it a no brainer. And before anyone says it, yes I've already been fit for the 718's haha!

I played the 716's and now play the 718's, and I honestly have no idea on how they could make this iron better. From turf interaction, to ball flight, to forgiveness on miss-hits............. they are perfect in every way.

I just attended a Titleist Thursday to get fitted for a new TS3, and when I was done the Rep asked me If I wanted to hit the new CNCPT CP-02 super club ($500 each!!), just for giggles.... I thought they were very nice, felt super soft and went at least 1 club father; but I would still stick with my 718 AP2's if given the choice.

It depends what you're currently gaming? If you need a change now then go for it, if not wait and see! I have 718 AP2's and can't fault them

They definitely upped the appearance - not an ugly one in the bunch. How bad do you want or need them?
Now, you get them for this season. The 2020 version won't be shipped until October and you don't want your 2018 fitting used - the shafts may change as well. The last option is most of the clubs may get a reduced list price once pre-release fittings are available and before the 2020 versions are released. You can still order and save a few bucks.

I guess that doesn't make it any easier.

I game 716 AP'1s. When the 718's came out I demo'd them and did not feel that big of a difference. So i'm waiting for the 720's to come out. I feel that the change will be substantial like with the TS Woods.

If you've been fit for the 718's, go for it. You'll get them fairly quickly, and enjoy an entire summer of using them. The 720 release date, if it follows along the traditional ways of the past, won't really be ready for purchase til close to the beginning of November, maybe late October. You should then really get fit again for those. I know that Kansas is a " beautiful place" to play golf all winter, so you could enjoy them after November? Take your fitting and go for it now.
  9. I just bought the 718 AP2’s and love them. I have read a lot of pros and amateurs did not like the 716’s as much as the previous version, but Titleist really did an awesome job with the 718’s. To me, the feel is awesome. I went through a full fitting will all manufacturers and these blew everything else out of the water. Walked in really wanting the JPX919 Tours, but could not argue with the numbers and feel. So, my thought is this - if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I would be worried that there might be changes to the 720’s for change’s sake that might not be that much (if any) in an improvement to the irons depending on the player. So, I bought now so I could enjoy the 718’s now with the confidence that I have the best irons for me.

I suppose, just to be crass, you could ask yourself about the cost difference between some discounted or used 718s versus the brand new price of the 720s. If the cost issue doesn't bother you and you are happy with what you are playing now, wait.

Considering how it's so easy to get a fitting these days, I feel like a lot of it just comes down to cost. It's remotely possible some newer model won't perform for your individual swing as well as some slightly older model, but what are the odds? Since those odds are so minimal at best, if the cost is not an issue, wait for the fitting and decide which is best for you.
  11. Go for it! Don’t wait or you’ll get passed up

Me, I am waiting until the new release early fall for the new 2020 AP3s. Cannot see purchasing two year old technology, when the latest is just six months away. I'm just sayin'. Of course I'm looking at going from from AP1s to AP3s with lighter shafts. Maybe KBS tour. See what my fitter says when it is time. When they are released to the public, I will be celebrating my 73rd birthday and want every advantage I can get.

    Hi Seth-

I am not sure how big of an improvement over the 718's but I had a fitting at TPI in February. The staff at TPI couldn't and would not give any details but they said they are very excited about the new irons.

Not sure if that helps you to make your decision. Play well.

If you're looking for a "sneak peak" there's a good chance you could see some pics or videos of guys on tour getting any of the new irons out an testing them sometime in June! Usually they being the tour seeding sometime around or after the US open. I only know that from following the on the range photos on golf WRX over the years as Titleist gets ready to release new equipment!

Thank you all for the thoughtful and helpful replies! At the end of the day I would be extremely happy with the 718’s, but as I could easily get one more season out of my current gamers, I may wait to see what Titleist has up their sleeves with the new model. As Chuck mentioned, we are talking about 2 year old tech/design now and that makes a lot of sense to me as well. Hit em close friends!
