  1. Hi everyone,

First time here and am probably over thinking things a bit, but want some opinions....

Just picked up a set of AP3's and now will be looking at wedges as well. I stepped away from an older set of Z-blends and in comparing them to the AP3's, the lofts are all about 1 degree different. The AP3's essentially just renumbered one club higher than the old ZB's. So would it be considered weird to be carrying what are now marked as 5 wedges?

    I would be looking at a 52.08, 56.10, and a 60.08 or possibly a 60.10 Vokey SM7s.

These basically should run me to full swing distances of 115, 100, and 85 respectively, and the Pitching wedge in the AP3 at 135, the 48 wedge at 125.

My normal play is to hit to a yardage that allows me to take a full swing going into the green, but have been playing more with a pitching wedge (the 48 now) from different distances, half swings, etc. Do I consider changing and going 54 58?

    Thoughts?

    Thanks

Although I have a rather unusual setup, my wedge gaps are 44-50-56-60-64. I'm playing a 46-10 at 44* so I use it in place of a 9 iron. It wouldn't be insane to follow the 4* rule with 44-48-52-56-60-64. If you want to be "traditional", with 52-56-and 60, then probably 52-08F, 56-08M and 60-10S. Best idea is to have a fitting on the wedges. I have 56-08M for the SW, 60-14K for the LW and a PM grind 64/10 for the XW. The 60-14K is surprising; I can hit it off firm sand or tight lies with the ball back. The other possibility is 52-08F, 56-14F, 60-08M. Have you ever thought about 62-08M? If you want a simpler wedge setup, 50-56-62. I've played 48-54-10S and 60L before.

I've also been playing AP3 with the 48* since the beginning of 2019. I look at the 48* as a pitching wedge as it was close to the CB I had prior.

At first, I thought I would have to change all wedges, but the stock full shot distance gap between the 48* and my SM6 50.08F is just fine for now at 8 yards, and I'm okay with that.

    The AP3 has N.S. Pro MODUS3 Tour105 (fitted)
    The SM6 has TrueTemper XP95 R300 (fitted)

In addition, with the upcoming SM8 in just a few months, I may be changing to N.S. Pro MODUS3 Wedge shaft that can pair up beautifully at same 105 weight for the SM8. I have hit this shaft only a few times but it was something much closer to what I was looking for, although my lofts may be changing with the new shaft... I'll see a fitter when it gets closer.

  4. Hiya!!

    Thanks for the replies!!

After finishing the fitting process on the irons (over 2 days after work...and that was amazingly fun and educational) my fitter suggested I go with the 5 wedge set-up as my 4 and 5 irons got a little erratic due to the shaft not being heavy enough in those two clubs. The 5 will stay in the bag, but an AMT White is going in rather than the black, allowing for the 5 wedge set.

In the fitting, my 5, 6 and 7 were adjusted to be 2* weak, and the 8 - PW to 1* weak. This set up the 8 on down as a 4* increment, and said take that through to the lob wedge. So...it will be a 52, 56 and 60. He also suggested keeping the same bounce I had with my old wedges (50.08, 54.10 bent 1* weak, and 60.08), as the courses here in Minnesota I am primarily on are not very soft. I picked up the SM7 56.10 which has the S-grind, so I will be curious how that will be as my old wedges (no grinds on them at all, so all basically F-grind). The 52.08 if I can find a gently used one will be F-grind by design only.

I do have thoughts of adding higher bounce to the sand and lob for softer sand/courses, so with that in mind, what have you found with the 56.14 (F-grind) and a 60.12 (D-grind). Any real noticable differences when you adjust your club usage by bounce based on grind?

    Thanks

Playing the 718 AP1's and have 5 "wedges" as well. The stock PW plays at 43* then the stock GW at 48*. Purchased a SM7 52*, 56*, 60*. I believe that have more options in the scoring club range is a better option than many other bags that I see that have several long clubs that most hit almost the same distance.
