BIG TIME ADVICE: Irons

  1. Hello all. Just signed up. First time poster. Looking for some BIG TIME advice.

I currently play png iblade 4-PW irons. My handicap is 6.2 but with the way I struck the ball most of last year, I'll be at a 7 before I know it. I am 48 years old, practice at least twice a week. Play twice a month, sometimes a little more.

I've concluded that with my lack of playing time, age, and all else that it is time for me to move away from the iblade irons. I prefer the size of an iblade -- certainly nothing larger than an i200. I also want to move away from png irons and back to the brand I used in college -- Titleist.

So, before my question: I know, I know ... get fitted, hit all the irons for myself, check lofts, lies, shafts, flexes and all else. That will happen just as I've done in the past.

But, in the meantime, I've checked specs on Titleist irons and it seems as though the lofts I am used to are found in the players sections of irons. I do not want to mess with changing lofts more than a degree since it also changes bounce angle. I am looking for something in the i200 range in Titleist's house.

So, which irons should I be looking at? I want more forgiveness now. But I don't need to play a melon head of an iron.

Advice is appreciated. Reasonable responses even more so.

    Thanks.

The T100 is the same lofts as the 620 clubs. The T100-s was added to match the lofts of the T200 and make it easier to use a blended set. All 3 have a forged face (the 200 is face only). The 200 is the "players distance iron" and the 100-s can still fit in for the shorter irons. With the newer construction materials and dampening, the "new" 6 iron ("old" 5 iron) will be longer than the old 6 but will still launch better than the old 5 for better stopping on the green. It won't just be a 5 iron in 6 iron clothing.

The T100 is used by many of the Titleist pro's and for those not practicing every day and playing every weekend, the players distance irons - T200 are still workable but with more forgiveness. T100/blended set of T100-s/T200 are all good choices once you find one that matches your eye and tests well in a fitting.

Welcome to the family. I would think your primary focus might be on the T100 or T100s sets. Actual fitting might drive you into another one of their models but my guess is the T100's will be the irons for you. Keep us posted as you narrow down the selection and start working that bag into a Titleist set.

Welcome MReid. The T100S is a players iron with stronger lofts.Although my woods and hybrid are Titleist, I'm playing PingS-55 irons, the precursor to the blade. I'm also a 6 handicap.

If I could afford them, I'd grab the T100s tomorrow! I've hit the T200, and although I liked the feel of the club, the blade is a bit long and didn't suit my eye.

Based on what you’re looking for it sounds like you’re going to be looking at either the T100, T100S or the T200 potentially. The T100S has the look of the T100 but has increased lofts to help get the ball up. I’ve not hit the T100S to compare to the T100. I would imagine feel between the two would be about the same.
  6. As a 7.1 handicapper and currently playing png S59's, I just recently ordered a set of T100S's. Look and feel were very similar to my Pings, but my miss-hits felt better with the 100S's. During my fitting process, I didnt realize how important both lie and shaft made a difference.
