    I don't know why, but this question has been bugging me for a while. Thanks in advance for anyone who can answer. When a manufacturer such as Titleist designates loft angle for an iron, a 28° 7-iron for example, is that the fixed angle between the shaft and face? If that's the case, actual loft angle at impact is several degrees less due to forward shaft lean, or designed impact position. In other words, a 28° 7-iron would actually deliver approximately 20° of loft at impact?

    Exactly. That's why different golfers hit the same club at different heights. I have always been a low ball hitter. I have a strong grip and tend to shut the face and lean the shaft. That "double whammy" has me hitting a lot of low pulls. It's also the reason most "players" irons have weaker lofts than game improvement models. Less textbook golfers tend to hit level or even lift up a bit at impact so the stronger lofted irons play closer to true loft. What is hard to trust is that the backspin from the downward contact of the properly delofted strike will actually produce greater height on the shot than the minimal spinning lifted shot at the level loft. Crazy game, isn't it.
