Weakening the lofts on the T400 or just using a higher club?

    I currently play AP1 and I need more help, especially with the long irons. A local fitter [not specifically Titleist] suggested the Titleist T400 with adjusted weaker lofts and a Nippon 850 shaft.

    I have one question: The lofts on the T400 irons are one iron difference to the lofts on the T300 (which is approx. the same as the AP1). For example, the T400 8i has the same lost as the T300 7i at 29*; the T400 7i has the same lost as the T300 6i; and so on.

    Instead of weakening the lofts on the T400, why not just buy a set starting with the 6i [instead of the 5] ... and using the T400 8i as my seven iron .... etc etc? Would I lose distance or something? Thanks. This is probably basic stuff to y'all, but I can't get a straight answer from the fitter who says 'yes that's possible' to all queries!

    Not a bad question and one that has been posted a few time on here in different ways. Several TT members will tell you they play a mixed set and use two 7 irons in the transition to support the gap in loft differences. Funny how we get caught up in the number printed on the bottom of the club. I think using two 6's or 7's is much better than bending a club as bending weakens the hosel and changes the bounce. Make your set up as you feel comfortable in what works for you and allows you to play your best golf. Enjoy!

    If you have the opportunity, it's worth testing the clubs to see if the the T400 8 iron indeed performs like the AP1 7 iron. While the lofts are near the same, sometimes the CG differences in the heads can impact the ball flight in ways that you may not expect. For me, when I've compared two clubs of this nature, I've found that the T400 8 iron might launch higher than the AP1 7 iron given the CG properties of the head. The T400 could result in a higher and shorter ball flight depending on your swing speed and attack angles etc.

    All else equal, the T400 should launch higher that the identical lofted T300, given the head shape of the T400 is more stretched back. Going for a club test will help answer all questions beyond doubt. I've always found that to be the way to go.

    I went T400 6-A and weakened the lofts by 1 degree. I am low ball hitter so the weaker lofts help and I blended with SM8 54 & 58 degree wedges.

    I switched from AP3 to T400. I can hit the 6 iron better than a T-300 5 iron, and comparing the 7 iron T400 to the the AP3 6 iron, it is easily a half club longer and easier to hit. I have 6-"43" and use 48/54/58 Vokey wedges. I haven't used a 5 iron in at least 6 years and I do use the T400 6 iron. I don't worry about the number on the bottom other than to pull the right iron from the bag. I have 130, 145 and 155 yard clubs. (8-7-6 iron). The primary difference is I no longer use a hybrid to get to 145 to 160 yards. I got the T400 to help with distance, I wouldn't increase loft to make it a "7 iron" in distance.
