Rather than fatigue, there may be a crack in the head or the shaft is "coming unglued". If the latter, you could end up with the head flying as far as the ball at some point Worth getting the driver checked by a shop that does more than replace grips, if you can't visually find a crack in the head or obvious damage to the shaft.

You will not see metal fatigue but what you are describing is usually what you see if there is a hairline crack in the head. Look real close around the edges where the face would have been welded onto the body of the head. I have also heard of cracking inside layers of the shaft so you might try switching the shaft if you have an extra of having someone you know that has a Titleist driver and would be willing to let you experiment on the range. 917's are past their warranty but you can get a good deal on a used replacement or move up to the TS or TSi series. I found a significant improvement in my move from 917D2 to TS3.

My buddies tell me that I use a reduction in distance or bad play as an excuse to get a new club. We will never know if they are right or wrong but I always enjoy the new clubs.

Guess that my 917d2 still in good shape. Of course, it has been dormant in 2020. Have playing sparingly in December but it still has pop. My fitter says once I get more rounds under my belt to come see him and he will gladly work with me on the new TSIs......
