983K vs new drivers

  1. I currently play a 983K that's been in my bag for years; all of my younger playing partners play the newest and latest drivers from all the manufacturers and not to brag but I am almost always with them or past them when it comes to distance.  Our handicaps are comparable so I don't feel like its because I'm a better golfer.  I've tried a couple of different demo's from the pro shops but none of the new drivers improve my accuracy or distance.  I have a limited selection being a lefty in a smaller town so I haven't hit many.  I would like to upgrade but I am having a hard time justifying it.  My question is, do the new drivers provide more distance via technology vs the technology in the 983K?

I have tried and bought several newer models since the 983K but still go back to it as my gamer.  I can hit more fairways with it than any new model Titleist driver.  It is a great club.

I think if you want to justify getting a new driver over a 983K you will need to break it.

Use what works. the 983K works for me. I can hit the 983K further then guys twice my size and hit the fareway with it. When they are useing the new technalogy and upgradeing once every 2 years. I have been playing the same driver for the past 7 years and it out porforms what the guys I play witht have. I have seen and played with people who have the latest and gratest. For my playing ability it works. I have hit 270yd par 4's in one at a course I have played a few times while travleing. Locales noteced really quickly that they over payed for clubs and should have spent more money on range balls. Its how you use it and your confidance with it. P.S par the first time bogy the second time berdie the last.. drive for show putt for doe.

I have tried other new drivers to compare with my 983k, most recent is the R11, and out of 20 shots each, I do not feel the "new technology" will provide more distance.  You have to find the one that fits you the best.

I have used many other drivers before the 983k and now having a hard time finding its replacement.  It has out beat many others like R7, R9, SQ, etc.

But don't get me wrong, my search for replacement will never stop, one reason is just to ensure my titleist is still in game.

The 983K is a classic. Until recently, I still gamed one. I've moved on to a 910 D2 and a 909 backup but I agree, it's all about what you're comfortable with.

I have played every new Titleist driver in the line since about 1990. I have found that with each iteration of the driver that I did pick up a few yards but that was not what the diggest difference was. The dispersion of the misses got tighter with each new club model. The other improvement made with each model is that the accuracy and distance on a miss hit was much better. There is a lot of data to support my own experience. I am sure that one of the Titleist Club Concierges will be able to find the data and post it. I would suspect that if you tried a 910 driver and found it to not be longer or more accurate than your 983K especially on a miss hit, it is probably setup with the wrong shaft for your swing. Another great benefit of the 910, the shafts are both adjustable and interchangable.

A few years ago, I tried a "non-Titleist" driver at a demo day, and bought it based on the results. I was playing the 905R at the time, and sold it to help pay for the new driver. When my custom built club came, it was not the same in distance or accuracy as the demo I had tried. But I made it work and learned to hit it, but started saving my coins for replacement. Earlier this year, I was finally able to purchase a 910 D3, and love it. It is easy to swing, and long! I guess my advice would be, if you are long and straight with your 983K, why change? If it is not broken, don't fix it. The only advantage you might have is to be custom fit and hit more fairways. If that is not important, save your $400 and get a new pair of Footjoys.

ok look at the tours if the 983k was better or the same as all the new stuff wouldnt they still hit it....yes they would.....some would say thay get paid to play all the new stuff......not true they have to try the new stuff and if it doesnt iut perfome there current stuff then they dont have too. moving on, is the current drivers longer of the face about 5-8 yards on on center hits.....on miss hits its not even close current 910 will go straighter and further on off center hits. look to get a custom fit correctly and results will be better. hope you can upgrade to the 910 absolutly love my d3 with my fubuki alpha 73 x. keep us posted

I managed to find a 983k in a super condition for next to nothing. It is an excellent driver, Iike the real weight and feel of this club. I prefer the smaller head to the 460cc. Going to use throughout this winter. Fine Driver so far

I'd stick to the what works for you and your confidence. I play older titleist equipment that was fitted for me and have a hard time (like you) justifying new clubs at this point.

Naturally, if every release had the promised 10 yards further with each release, I could buy one of the many upgrades from another company and add 50 yards to my drive since the 910 was released.  LOL....

In looking at the 913 (or 910), what difference you are looking at is the ability to fine tune loft/lie, and take advantage of newer shafts and have one that works best with your swing you have today.  Good chance you'll improve dispersion, less loss with mishits,  and/or more distance.  Will hitting 10% more fairways or 10 more yards make a difference in your game?  If not or if you can't see that much gain side by side in a fitting, then until the face cracks, you're set.

    Jerry,

The 983 K is probably one of the best drivers they have ever made. I think that the biggest advantage of the new drivers is the adjustability. Once you have found a good match of the shaft and the head that you hit the best the ability to tune the driver is going to help.

I think the one thing to keep in mind is not only the advancement of the drivers but the matching the new technology of the golf ball and the theories of hitting them further.

  14. Like most players my age, I just turned 70, I'd love to hit it a little farther. I'm not consumed by the distance search, I still play to a solid 6, distance has never been the strength of my game. Anyway, I have a 983 driver that I've played for several years, but lately have gone to a Taylor Made M2, hoping to pick up a few yards. When I hit it well, it seems to be a little longer, but I hit the old 983 much more consistently. Any thoughts?
