Driver Woes

  1. I love my 3 wood. I would marry my 5 wood if it was allowed, though my wife may have issues with that one; they're both Cobras by-the-way. I hit them well (around 220-230 and 205-215 yards respectively) and 90% of the time go generally in the direction I intend. However, my driver is an entirely different story. I don't understand why a driver is so different than a 3/5 wood, but it is a completely different experience.

On the same round when I'm hitting my woods straight and my irons are throwing balls like darts, my driver slices so hard I fear my ball's going to return full circle and hit me in the back of the head like a boomerang.

This happens with my current driver as well as with any other I've tried out at club manufacturer range days. Certainly, I continue to work on swing mechanics (I cannot break 80 to save my life). I know part of the issue is the person swinging the club and not the club itself, BUT, on my really good days when everything else is rockin', the driver always comes a knockin' on every tree to the right.

So, my question is this, could a large contributing factor be the driver? If so, what driver would you recommend based on your experience? If not, any wisdom as to why a person might swing his/her driver so differently than a 3 wood would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

It may not be the driver head, but rather the shaft or just your swing mechanics. Shafts can be to long, to flexible, to stiff, etc... and with swing mechanics you maybe you're just not realizing a driver correctly. I suggest you go see a professional swing instructor/fitter and see what the session produces.

What is true is the club face is open to the path. What the cause is purely conjecture. A weak grip? Ball position? Take away too far inside? Out to inside swing?

I would go see my local pro, but even an online pro with an uploaded video will work. Like therapy to accommodate your wife and the 5W, the result may include a new driver but you also have to acknowledge your contribution.

When you said they were both Cobras, were you referring to the clubs or your club and your wife?
As far as the driver, I think you just described most golfers dilemma. The length of a typical driver makes it harder to control than a 3 wood. If you want to experiment with a shorter shaft, you might find that it results in more control. I have a hard enough time finding the center of club consistently and refuse to go with what they consider the standard length on a driver. If you get a chance try a driver fitting and start with the shortest available shaft and work your way up until you start seeing a loss of control. Also, don't automatically pull out the driver at the tee box. Plan on your second shot. For me, I will use anything that gets me 100 to 140 for my approach shot to the green.
And whether it's allowed or not, don't marry your 5 wood. The other clubs might get offended, and it can turn into a legal nightmare if you ever want to trade it in for a newer model.
  5. Hilarious response! Thanks - good thoughts as well. I'll try choking up on the grip a bit; may be an issue of shaft length.

You are hitting a club that is shorter and more lofted. Most people hit those more consistently. Your driver might be too long for you and the loft is too low. Might have it checked. Heck, my driver is set at 10.75 and my fairway at 16.50. At 75 I am respectable off the tee with the driver and on the fairway great accuracy with the fairway. Of course having the a good shaft makes a difference. The new TSis are awesome metals.
  7. I just saw your tag; I'll be swinging through Mount Pleasant in a few days! It's beautiful down there.

Thanks for the thoughts. My driver is a Titleist 915 so it's adjustable. I'll set it to the highest loft and see if that helps.

Do you have the same problem when teeing your 3 wood? You say your 3 and 5 are great and I am assuming you mean from the fairway or off the turf on a long Par 3 hole. Hitting down on a shallow descending path and probably doing the same with driver when you need an inside to out ascending path. Does sound like you need to ensure you are fit for the right driver and have a professional look at your technique. Maybe both need a slight adjustment. Good luck and hope you get it worked out. The game is a lot more fun when you can stand on a tee box and generally know you will hit most fairways.
  9. Thanks for the feedback - I am more consistent with my 3/5 woods on the fairway than on the tee box. You may be on to something having to do with me shifting my swing mechanics, or my stance, (or something) on drives. Was going to focus on short game lesson tune ups; I think I'll have to add a day of driving now too. Maybe I'll finally creep into a single digit handicap that's been alluding me for too long!
