It’s been 11 years since my last proper driver fitting. I remember it well - had been playing a TM R7 425, and wanted to switch back to Titleist. Took experimentation with 4 shafts until I found the right one for a 910 D3. Well, I’ve since had a 913 D3, 915 D3 and now 917 D3. I’ve been using the same shaft for the last decade. Tomorrow, I hope to find out what all the fuss is about with these TSR drivers! Best part, I’ve been hitting my 917D3 well if late, so hopefully I’ll have that swing tomorrow and will be able to see first hand how the latest tech will help me improve my game.

First thing I learned is that I’m no longer the tech head I was ten years ago. Where I was once familiar with names and specs, they’re just tools now. Don’t really care what it is as long as it performs. Anyways…

My current 917D3 with Aldila RIP. The numbers off the Trackman were consistent. Averages: club head speed around 92, smash factor 1.45ish carry 231. Launch and spin too high.

Enter the TSR2, 9* w/ Tensei 1K Black. Have to say, I couldn’t feel the club head with this shaft. But the numbers don’t lie. Club head speed to 95, smash factor to 1.48, carry into the 240s. Forgot the launch and spin. My Titleist fitter, Andy Inman, was pleased with the results, maybe no further tweaks necessary. But of course, that was just a tease.

On to the TSR3. Speed and distance was good, but I just couldn’t get hit this club straight. After a few tweaks, it was clear, this was not the club for me.

TSR4 - IIRC, highest club head speeds, smash factor peaked at 1.51. Hit a couple of balls almost on top of each other. But, a few others not so good.

Back to the TSR2, tweaking a bit more. 10* with Project X HZRDUS Black 4G 60. Admittedly, a little fatigue and concentration loss at this point led to some bad swings (hip slide). But club head speed 95-97, launch just shy of 14*, spin 2300, carry approaching 250 (one near 260!), smash factor consistently @ 1.49. Winner!

Just for kicks, tried the Aldila in the TSR2 as well. Not quite the numbers that the HZRDUS offered, but still performing well, and Andy suggests I might want to experiment between the two.

Obviously, we’ll see how this all translates in the course.

We had a little time to look at the fairway woods too. Andy’s philosophy is to have consistency in feel between driver and woods. He noted the difference in the makeup of my current bag; the Aldila and then some Diamana blues.

He set me up with some shafts similar to the HZRDUS, but in the end, for my swing, the numbers don’t warrant changing out that part of the bag. But Andy tweaked my 3W to improve the numbers.

Big thanks to Andy Inman. And I’m very impressed with Cote’s Performance Center in Portland, CT. Weather wise, it wasn’t the most pleasant of days today, but hitting out of those heated bays into the range was nice.
