7 wood vs 4 hybrid

    Hey all, switched up my irons earlier this year which are weaker lofts so created a bit of a gap between my lowest iron and 3 hybrid

    I already have a u500 3 iron so don’t really need the hybrid so looking at either a TSR 7 wood or a 4 hybrid(open to TSI but may wait for TSR)

    For those who have compared a 7 wood and 4 hybrid in a fitting what came out on top for you and what were the main benefits/drawbacks?

    I have personally switched back and forth over the years between multiple fairways versus multiple hybrids. I do not hit long irons well (barely hit short irons well :)). You need to decide based on your most frequent type of shot needed. If you more often need a high lofted shot that will not run out, the 7 wood is a great choice. If you hit more versatile shots, from the rough or under trees, using multiple hybrids might be your best bet. Just go with what you feel most comfortable hitting and what suits your style of play.

    This is basically my thinking as well. I've been a 3w with a single hybrid guy ever since I got my first hybrid with the 913 series and this past year I've been considering getting a 7w. Ultimately decided against the 7w because I like to hit different shots with that club (particularly lower knockdowns on some tee shots) and figured trying to hit lower shots with a 7w would be counterproductive lol. Hybrids just seem more versatile.

    Definitely head to a Titleist certified fitter and hit both.

    For me the hybrid was a little more workable and had a tighter dispersion. Being a scoring club I hit into greens those factors made it the clear choice for me. The wood had a higher peak flight and more spin, which I actually liked, but the hybrid still has plenty of height and spin with a good descent angle so it shouldn't be skipping through firmer greens.

    The "right" answer is go get fit. Or go test yourself on a launch monitor- shout out Golf Galaxy for very reasonably priced trackman bay rental. In fact, you can sign up for "Indoor Golf Day" on Oct 22 for a free 1 hour sim session and go experiment.

    But I know when I come to forums it's because I'm avoiding a fitting session, so here's my two cents:

    7 wood launches higher and spins more than a hybrid of the same loft. Carry distance is likely to be longer, though total distance may not be. That may be a good or bad thing depending on your needs and style of play. If I was keeping a U500 3 iron in play, I would gravitate to the 7 wood to have a high, soft landing shot in the arsenal to attack par 5s and long par 3s. You can flight down the U500 when you need the running shot or fairway finder.

    A 21 hybrid has a lower ball flight vs a 21 fairway; however, the fairway is much easier to hit. I've never been able to hit a 21 or 23 hybrid very well. 25 and 27 hybrids I can practically hit in my sleep. I've been using a 7 wood and a 25-26 hybrid probably since about 2007. 27-30 deg since then too. Up until 2015, carried a 32 or 34 hybrid. Understand I played very little golf between 2000-2007. Used to be able to hit long irons. The guys at Fairway Golf have helped out tremendously on iron fitting. I play MB 6-P but 1/2" short and 2* upright. Since I use oversize grips, Winn Excel RF keeps the swingweight of the irons at D2.

    i have been playing a 20* TSi1 7 wood (1/2” longer than standard) and TS2 19* hybrid (also 1/2” longer than standard) in the same bag for a few weeks.
    I created an “extra” space via a 46-52-58* wedge setup.
    My 7 wood gets me the extra distance in need on a couple of holes. I use the hybrid (played like an iron) when the lies are less ideal.
    So far, so good.

    As a mid handicapper I was a de lofted 3 wood/3 hybrid/4i player for many many years before I switched to Titleist in 2022. In the switching process I took a long look at the top end of my bag and realized I never hit my Hybrid and hated my 4i, because of this I made the decision to go 3/5/7 woods and drop the 4i.

    For me the versatility of my 7 wood is unmatched and had become my go to club for the "just get it out there safe" shots. Secondarily I have the upmost confidence in hitting it into greens ans sticking because of the higher launch angle

    I favor the 7w over a hybrid. Understand the versatility/value of a hybrid but never felt confident over the ball with that club. My swing is more of a ‘sweep’ so FW woods work best for me. But agree 100% with others, only way to really know is getting fitted by a Titleist club fitter pro.

    I have never been a good hybrid player, went to a 7 wood with the TSR line and have been very pleased so far.

    I am considering this currently, having picked up tsi2 7-wood and ts2 hybrid both at 21*. I am having some anxiety about playing a higher lofted wood after a hybrid, but I like the softer landing 7-wood.

    What you see in my thumbnail is what you get. I've had that particular 7 wood in my bag for 3 years now. I use a lofted driver so need for a 3 wood. Can't go wrong with either 41.5" and Bassara R set to C3 or 41" and Kai'ili set to D3. I use it off the tee on short par 4s with narrow fairways and those 180-190 yard par 3s AND it is deadly. The 25H when hit pure is 170 yards. About 155-160 on the 27H (set to 28). I keep the 910H as a backup for the other two hybrids.

    I am in a similar position right now, and I am trying to decide if I want to make a switch from a traditional 4 iron to the u500 4 iron. I want to get it in hand and see how it feels. I would love to have a club that I can trust to play around 225-235 off the tee.
