Sending Irons to USGA to Check Grooves

  1. I have a brand new set of 690.MB and 681 that I got off eBay recently. Neither are on the USGA conforming list so I was going to send them in so I could play with them in tournaments. Has anyone sent anything into the USGA for them to check the grooves? The process is fairly detailed online, but couldn't find any feedback online of how the process went.

    Thanks!!

Everything Titleist produces meets USGA standards. The only problem you would have is if these were counterfeit and not produced under Titleist's strict manufacturing processes. Unless you are playing in a pretty important USGA event like a US Amateur, you probably can trust that no one will have a micrometer on the first tee checking grove depths.

You said new. Did you mean 620 MB or 690 MB. In any case, both meet pre-2010 rules and pre-2010 Groove rules.

From my search of the USGA database, the 690 meet all requirements while the 681 require additional testing for the current groove specifications.

Your post threw me for a loop at first. I guess in my ignorance, I would never have even thought to look at the USGA list. I would just assume all big brand clubs meet standards.

Not that this answers your question at all .
  5. Thanks for the responses.
    Couple of clarifying statements/questions:

    1) These are the 690.MB and 681 from the early 2000s. I currently play the 718MB and the new 620MB have gone very far from what I like to see at address. I also grew up playing the 690.MB so they are familiar (and slightly nostalgic)

    2) The 690.MB are not on the conforming list. The 690MB are though. The 690.MB came out after the 690MB

    3) I know the grooves are conforming since Titleist never went to square grooves, but if I play high level tournaments in California (Mid-Am, Am, etc.) or the USGA qualifiers for Mid-Am, Am, etc., wouldn't it be illegal to play a club that is not on the conforming list?

    Thanks for the help!

This is where I would check based on the age of the equipment.

Questions regarding the conformance status of any clubs should be directed to the USGA Equipment Standards department at (908) 234-2300.

Best of luck in your tournaments.
