  1. An afternoon on the range for me today working on grip and takeaway.

What tech or gadgets do you all use while practicing? and do you structure your practice? do you have a set routine, structure or is your practice random and just smashing balls ?

Today the first 20 balls I hit where wedges, chips working up to full shots to warm up, then I moved to around 30 shots working on takeaway (changes depending on what I’m working on that week) Then I played a virtual round on my Garmin g80. Got this at Christmas and helped me on the range massively this year. Used to do a round in my head before this, driver then a wedge to a target, mid iron if driver went astray for e.g.

Practicing more than ever this off season trying to get down to single figures from 11.8 hoping to take my practice onto the course tomorrow. ta mick

I don't use a lot of gadgets, mainly just my alignment sticks. I try to "practice with a purpose". Some days is almost all wedges or maybe it's about the swing plane. I also fall into the bad habit of practicing without sticking to my pre-shot routine. That's one of the most important things for me, to keep me in check as i transition from practice to play. Good luck and have fun!

Sounds like a good session. Practicing in a way that challenges yourself and creates a game like environment will help train your brain to think the same way whether you’re on the range or the course. Good luck!
  4. Big proponent of practicing short game shots over anything else. Next time you are playing and the course is empty pick a random hole and use one ball - play a chip and putt out from 5 yards off the edge of the green no matter where the pin is located and go "around the clock" 12 spots to chip from, finish out the hole from each spot, if you get up and down 50% of the time your score will be 30. If you can do better than 30 you are doing exceptional, remember, some chips will be easy, some could be from a bunker, some with no green to work with some long pitches etc. 50% up and down rate is better than it sounds. And its a fun way to practice different shots with a scoring goal in mind. My record is 27 and i was in the zone lol

Aside from a putting green, there's no practice facility at our local muni. I do practice chipping and putting. With putting I'll lay down 2 irons and not try to touch either shaft on the backstroke or follow thru.I'll putt 20 balls or so and then move location to another hole on the practice green. With chipping,I'll chip to a hole and then putt, trying to get up and down. I'll take 5 balls each to 5 different hole locations, and see how many times I can "save par".
  6. I also use alignment stick, also place my lob wedge at 90* to the stick (for ball position). I start with wedge to loosen up, then move up the bag. At the end I take the sticks away & mix it up. I mostly focus on the basics, grip - posture - alignment - ball position & connection during the swing.

I might also add, rarely are my practice sessions the same day as my playing rounds. A big difference between a pre-round warm up and a practice session. Warm up is just a few shots with each or every-other club in the bag. Practice is much more repetitive with a specific club or drill.

Have to agree with both of your comments. Practice with a purpose. Most people I see on the range have no idea why they are there. And when I warm up before a round I normally use a nine iron just to get a feel and tempo. I am real trouble if I have to practice before each round. Usually hit the club a few times I will use on the first tee.
Always putt because there is where you can save the most strokes and where tempo is the key. A few chips so I can save a few putts. Always having a plan whether practicing or warming up. Will be great to get back in June.
  9. Gadgets I use alignment sticks and just got an orange whip...great tempo builder that makes you finish your swing. As far as practice I always keep a handful of tokens in my car so when I get the itch I can go out. Start with 7 iron and go up to 4 iron, then pick targets and swing my pitching and gap wedge. Typically only bang a few with the hybrid wood and driver at the end

On the range I never hit the same club twice. Use the TwitchTrainer for sequencing and alignment sticks. Putting Ill use a metronome and the chalk line or Pelz putting device !

Usually start with lower wedges moving up the bag. Use alignment sticks. Sometimes I imagine I am playing a specific hole and try to hit drive in fairway and whatever iron is left to the pin.

On chipping practice I have a range bag of twenty balls. Throw them around the green and whatever lie you have is what you get. Pitch to one pin and see how many I can get up and down. Also do ten, twenty and thirty yard pitches from varying lies.

Putting is one, two and three footers. Ten one footers in a row, then two footers then three. Goal is trying to build a repeatable stroke: if you can make ten three footers in a row, you can putt very well. Usually hit a few putts of distance for feel.

Ocassionally use Dave Pelz shoulder alignment mirror.

I usually work on about 2 specific moves for my swing. Try to do a specific thing. Also I sometimes record my swing on my phone. Most of the time, it's humbling to look at your swing and realize it is not what you think it is. :)

Hey Michael great questions! I personally just use alignment sticks, the swing easy arm band trainer, and occasionally impact tape. The tape is great if I’m not really sure where my miss on the club face is. Once I figure that out I can start dissecting where I’m going wrong in my swing. I’ll use the sticks for some swing path training if I feel like I need them. I’ll also use the swing easy band if I feel like my arms are getting too fast and disconnected from my lower body. I don’t like to use too many gadgets because I’m a big feel player and when you go out and play you’re not using gadgets on the course. I’ll usually go into a range session wanting to work on one, maybe two clubs max. So for example some days I’ll just bring my 8 iron or other days I’ll bring my 8 iron and my hybrid if I wasn’t hitting it well in a recent round. Usually I’ll do that for half the bucket and try to pay attention to detail and treat every shot like it’s a real one on the course. Then the next half of the bucket I’ll pick targets 100 yards and within with my range finder and try to hit a couple shots to each distance. Those are my scoring clubs that I’ll either be trying to save par with or hit in close for birdies. I like to do this because these aren’t full swing thoughts and it’s a nice way to close out my practice session.
