I have been a +2 handicap for 2 years, and have done a lot of exploration into the game of golfs different clubs and equipment. I recently got a chance to hit and test the numbers of every company's driver lineup for this year. Let's get started. (ALPHABETICALLY)
cally-
cally has done some great innovational changes to their clubs over the past few years, and by few years I mean... decade. The past 4 drivers from the cally golf company have been practically identical when it comes down to the feel and numbers. I can't outright say they are all the same, but they have the most similar differences when it comes down to every brand. When cally's Paradym driver line dropped early this year, I was excited to test it out, because it is an extremely good looking club no doubt. The shaded blue carbon is very nice looking, and it screams new. But when I put it head on against its 3 year old counterpart, the Mavrik, and its one year old little brother, the Rouge ST it was almost impossible to tell the difference. I personally liked the Rouge ST better. I even tried some of the older Epic lines and there was little to no difference feel and numbers wise. While I do love the looks of the Paradym, there is no need to go out and buy it when you can get the same exact club with a different name on 2ndSwing for a fraction of the cost. Overall the cally lineup is still pretty great, although drivers distance wise are pretty much maxed out right now across all company names, the cally is a pretty long driver, with great forgiveness, they also provide the variety for all different players and handicaps ranging from +---30. The triple diamond is also always one of the least spin drivers on the market and with that, overall I give this years release a 8.5/10.
Cobra-
I have always had a bad look at Cobra, I have seen them for a while as the stepchild of the big golf industry, and that they would never be in consideration for a top 4 spot on the brand tier list, but over the last year and a half, that has changed considerably. at the end of 2021, I tried out my buddy's set of the Cobra Tour Irons, and man they were pretty sweet. This led to me trying some more of the brands clubs, and to be honest they are pretty nice. I still have that message in the back of my head about Cobra being an ugly Step-child of the golf industry (same with another brand we will get to soon) I'm going to keep this short and sweet but the Aerojet is sick. Its just another reminder to the golf community how insanely long a Cobra driver can be hit on the best of best swings. Overall the driver is definitely not one for a higher handicap, I found it to be extremely unforgiving, but one of the best off the great hits. It provides a clean look, and incredible sound, I do like the hot.face feel, I wish they kept the Infinity link symbol on the front but its still like hitting the ball with a trampoline. Overall the club comes in at a solid 8/10.
miz-
I have a close love for miz golf clubs. since 2021 I have had the miz ST-z 3 wood in my bag and no doubt it is the best feeling club ever, so when my friend told me he got the new driver, I wasted no time getting to his place to try it in the simulator. My first hits with the club, and similar to another Japanese brand we will get to soon, it is definitely one of the most forgiveness based clubs out there, the poor strikes off the club face weren't flying my normal 270-280, but more 255-265, but were going extremely straight. I played a quick simulator round with a few friends and hit the driver off every tee, my normal days I hit 9-12 fairways a round, with the badly placed balls going far, but not straight. I witnessed a total of 15 fairways hit (excluding par 3's). I might've had a club more into the greens but I can't lie there is quite a noticeable difference when it comes to ball flight. Japan is my homeland, and my dad worked at miz baseball for a while when I was young, so I know that they put extreme effort into crafting the best possible equipment. This year blew a lot of big names out of the picture on the chart and landed me a 9.5/10 on my scale.
png-
BUY THE G425 IF YOU WANT THE png. ITS THE SAME EXACT THING IF NOT BETTER. LOUD AS ANYTHING AND WEIRD LOOKING. no but seriously, the G425 was an incredible driver, I feel like everybody had that in their bag for a little while, but the G430 is a bit worse when it comes to my scale. When doing this ranking and hitting the models, then grabbing the handy dandy G425 and comparing, the 430 came up with worse numbers. I don't know if its a coincidence or an issue with my particular weighting likes, but those are the numbers. Also, I know a lot of people that have had issues with png's Quality Control, they make great clubs don't get me wrong, but I had teammates on my high school team that bought the driver and it came broken, I have also read online about similar stories. this is definitely a failed release from png and it comes in at a 5.5/10 on my scale. (P.S. the G425 is a 10/10)
srxn-
Wonderfully done. I never showed interest in srxn until Matsuyama Hideki won the masters in 2021, but man they did a great job. It's almost 1:1 with miz when it comes to forgiveness and slight loss of yardage due to the priority being the ball flight staying straight. At first, the entire head being titanium, and no use of carbon, scared me a little, I was worried it would be simply too basic, but after a few swings, the thin layer of titanium alloy on the crown and body of the club makes for better contact at impact, and the face comes out super hot. that is all I can say about the club, it's good. A solid 9.5/10 from srxn.
TM-
for a period of time in 2019-2022, I was a TM guy. I repped all TM in the bag with the release of the Sim and Sim 2, and was a total fanboy for Rory and Dustin. When TM released the Stealth, I automatically purchased it and was in on the, "carbonwood era" claim. After a few months, I realized that the driver is extremely spinny off the face, has a not so friendly look over the ball, is extremely over the top with backed claims, and truly isn't that good. Then the cherry on top, after 9 months of carrying the driver and having a love-hate relationship with it, the entire face broke first by bubbling, then cracking down the middle. After this, I broke up with TM, and decided to try out some other brands instead of just purchasing the Stealth 2, like I would've if it was a year ago. I ended up giving it a go though, and it was the same thing just with a gloss crown, high spin, low forgivness, and truly bad preformance. I truly still to this day recommend the sim and sim 2 to people that want to try TM drivers, and love the other clubs that TM produces, but I think the idea of the carbonwood is truly a fad that I assume they will overcome in a few years. 6/10.
Titleist-
Titleist is looked at as more of a iron, wedge, putter, and golf ball company for years. Although the TS, and TSI were both the best tour Drivers for a long period of time, they have never been a critically acclaimed wood making company. Until the TSR. The TSR outperforms every driver on the market right now and it's not very close. The original gloss black and silver line head, the face alignment, the low spin and ball flight, and extremely satisfying sound off the face, it has been truly my favorite driver this year by a long shot. Titleist spends more time innovating a driver year to year than competing companies; the last release being in 2021, and it truly sets them apart from their counterparts. The biggest difference in model to model changes comes with the TSI to TSR changes, although the TSI is a great club, it had higher spin numbers on best shots, less ball flight corrections, a sharper face that doesn't pop as much, and different weighting. Overall the TSR is a 10/10 release and with the wide variety of club selection when it comes to TSR1-TSR4, is also another added bonus. Titleist doesn't just own the tour market for no reason, they prove year to year what you are spending your money on, and backing it up with preformance. Incredible.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Wilson Dynapwr 8/10- great choice for lower costs
PXG 0211 7.5/10- same low cost but is a great feeling and sounding club.
Tour Edge C723 9/10- extreme distance and head stability, also great looking!
XXIO X 4/10- decent preformance wise similar to the srxn, but they charge like a million dollars per club and its not worth it, if your really paying for XXIO just buy an autoflex shaft.
Cleveland Launcher 5/10- great for high handicappers looking for a confidence booster off the tee, but if you're a lower to mid handicap looking for a Cleveland club, and its not a wedge or putter, then you need to get fitted.
