  1. I used to be a teaching pro, many years ago. Long enough that my Titleist rep would provide me with Tour Professional 100 balls which I believe were balata covered. I recently began playing again after many years away from the game, with the intent of getting back into teaching. Something I've found is that the feel of today's balls are just not that great. I've not tried new Pro V1 balls yet but a host of others. The sound and feel is just off. What are the best feeling balls everyone is using? Are the new ball designs just always going to be missing that nice soft feel?

Welcome back to the game K and to our forum. Well, Tour Professional was the last "wound" ball but the cover was not balata anymore. It was urethane covered and was the predecessor to the solid core balls everyone manufactures today. You will never find a ball with the same feel as wound balls but you also will not get the out-of-round issues and large cover cut issues we had with wound balls. The softest feeling high-end Titleist ball is the AVX. You might give it a try if feel is your most important attribute. They will fly a bit lower than ProV1 but might get you more of that feel you are looking for. Other than that, just know that over time, you will adjust to the solid core balls like most of us have done. Good luck and wishing you many enjoyable rounds of golf.
