I think that I got into a bad habit recently by trying my usual setup except that I close the face by a degree or two. I don't know if this is good or bad because my accuracy improved along with some added distance. The distance I can figure out because the face is closed but accuracy I can't. When I asked a couple of my buddies to watch my swing, they thought the face was closed but everything else was ok. They even said that there are some players that play with their face closed (which to me I don't care because I'm not a pro). My question, does anybody know anyone who plays with the irons closed and what are their results? I play AP1 (714) irons 2 degrees up and hard stepped.

    Hi Walt,

It sounds like you might be compensating for your slice by using a stronger grip position, and there are a lot of players who use a stronger grip for more distance. If you notice that you are starting to over draw the ball, start switching back to your old setup since it would probably mean you are releasing the club faster.

Hey Spud, You know, I don't think I'm. I usually don't hit a slice unless I really chase a shot hard and cut across the face, but normally my shots are very high and usually straight. I do think that I strengthened my grip some, but almost hate to switch since I am hitting the ball well. It looks goofy from a set-up position but the results are usually good. I always thought that you will draw the ball with a closed clubface, well not here and I can't understand it!

Ah, perhaps I misinterpreted what you meant by closing the face. Is your grip still neutral in relation to the clubface then? If so, maybe it just better matches your release timing. Or having the center of gravity on the head trail behind the shaft helps you make a smoother take away. Really speculation at this point without seeing a swing video.

Also a draw is the exact opposite of a slice in terms of the club, inside to out path. Closed club face with a normal swing should go straight, maybe a little extra side spin, but I think you'll also release the club later.

To both Sam and Spud, Thanks for the reply. Was out yesterday playing in our usual game and my setup was the same as usual except for my closed club face and yes my shots went dead straight. It's almost like a very closed face driver that you see sometimes when you address it. My swing has not changed, my shot pattern is about the same just this goofy setup. I tried setting the club up normal but get terrible results, usually very high and not going where I aimed at. My greenside wedges I play normal and have no problem with a nice high lob and checking up fairly quick. It's just my irons that look goofy setting up. By the way, distance and direction really has not changed 7 iron usually 150 is staying the same, 9 iron 125-130 same and my fairway, utility and driver no problem, setup is normal.

Not sure if that is really a bad habit, but it could lead to problems. I just recently got out of a snap hook spree, If you close your club face at set up, I think naturally you will have more shaft lean before you start your swing, but it could possibly turn out to be a bad thing, or a good thing. Take a video of your swing and go frame by frame too see whats going on!
