I had some trouble today getting out of the wet bunkers while playing at my home course. My first thought was to consider playing wedges with less bounce, but not sure that will help. Any help with this matter will be greatly appreciated.

I know I play some shots, like this one, differently than others, but since I am confident that I can pick it pretty clean, I like to play it like it's not in a bunker at all. I pretend its a tight fairway, I move my legs very close together and hit the shot with an open face 60M SM5 Vokey, which has 8* bounce. Shaft a little forward if you need to run and roll, shaft more upright if you want high and soft. Hit the ball first or no more than an 1/8" behind it, or you'll either skull it from the bounce, or it won't go anywhere.

By the way, I LOVE my SM5 Vokey Wedges. I could play a whole round with my 60* if I had to. Who needs to putt. I can chip it in pretty regularly.

If the bunkers are so wet and the sand is very packed, you may want to go down to your gap or pitching wedge instead of your normal sand or lob wedge. I am assuming we are talking about a green side bunker. As always you need to practice this situation to feel comfortable when you play.

I have run into this problem as we are getting much more rain than normal for this time of the year. I have found you have to get a lot more vertical or a lot more of a V swing than a U swing on your back swing. Other wise you will have a tendency to bounce the leading edge into the ball sculling it either over the green or into the side of the bunker.

I messed this shot up a couple of times before I figured it out. Play the ball as if it were any other shot outside of the bunker. If the sand is wet and packed down, it is extremely difficult to get the leading edge of the club underneath the golf ball when trying to play a standard bunker shot. You'll either blade it or dig in and flub the shot. You are much better off to try and pick it clean or strike down on the ball as you normally would from a fairway lie.

When you are in a hard or wet bunker you play with the face less open. When you do a hard bunker you play a normal pitch shot.

Everybody has a different technique but I hit about an inch or two behind the ball regardless.

Blasting is just about a no-no in wet or hard sand.

I keep my stance open but the face of the club is square. The swing is the same, varied by how far I am from the hole.

I will try and pick the ball clean from the lie. The bunkers around here barely have sand so I've had plenty of practice.

Hi Phillip , like some of the other guys said I also take a pretty narrow stance and try to almost pick it clean. I use low bounce wedges for these types of shots. I like to pick spots behind the ball based on how firm the sand is ( I'm a splasher ) 1/2" if firm all the way to 3" if soft and dry. Hope that helps.
