So my issue is that I'm 5'5 with a destroyed body from motocross racing. I am currently a 5 handicap and have playing at a 2 but now tournaments we have to play from the tips. Well since I mostly drive the ball 240 to 250 and sometimes 260 if all goes right I can't hardly reach par 4's. It's difficult to score when you go driver 3-wood on a par 4 and your still not on.. Par 3's also are usually a 3-wood. I'm getting so frustrated it's ruining the game for me. Do I quit tournaments that I absolutely love or is there someway a guy my size can put the ball out there further with all clubs? It's hard to have fun when you are chipping all day even when you are flushing your approach shots.. Thanks everyone!!!!

    Hi Brian,

Check in with a pro to make sure your technique is sound. I'm also 5'5" and carry the ball 250-260 which usually gets me to 7 iron range on most par 4s from the tips at my local courses. There was one small adjustment I made with my lower body to unlock 20 yards.

Second, if you don't want to quit tournaments, just keep playing and record your honest results. The handicap system should take care of the rest.

    Best,

    Spud

PGA tournaments run close to 7400 yards, which is far beyond the average golfer driving of 240-260 yards. You can work with a trainer, golf coach, and access to Trackman to try to get longer. To get from 250 to 275 will rarely happen on one's own. If you have a physical limitation and 240-260 is it, then you have to decide to bite the bullet on playing the tips. TW and PM in their 40's just can't manufacture the distance the guys in their 20's do. If the tournaments aren't fun anymore, life is too short to not enjoy a round.

Brian, 20 years ago I played in the next to last group in the Florida Open on a 7350 yard course, which was LONG back then. A little dude from South Florida hit it 250 on the button, every time. We were all 20-30 yards by him. He WON the Florida Open that year. His short game was brilliant, and his putting was even better. And I asked him afterward what was the secret. And I quote, "Ed, I worked from 100 yards in until my hands bled, stayed in the bunker until I made one, and hit 200 6' putts everyday until I could do it blindfolded!". Don't let distance detract you from golf. As Don and Spud said, you can find a few yards easily with some help. And master those hybrids (which I hate, LOL)....DRIVE FOR SHOW, PUTT FOR DOUGH!!.....

Very true!! Good advice! The sport is just too fun to spend all day upset at a tourney!! I'm going to work with a trainer over our winter as well as a swing coach to see if we can find the distance. If we don't then that's ok, I'll play for fun..
