I have lost my confidence in bunkers.  I am hitting them right into the bunker wall---no loft at all.

I have worked with a couple different teachers and have read everything I can get my hands on from Utley to Pelz on this---lower stance, weight forward, it all works when I practice but doubt creeps in on the course.

My last round it cost me five strokes.  I am 7.8 index.  I believe I am missing something pretty basic.

    Any ideas?

For me (7.9 index) when I start hitting hosel rockets I usually lose the "thump" meaning I tend to get my hands forward, the ball back in my stance, my weight on my back foot, and I hit too far behind the ball. I go back a forth between the chunk-and-run and the more traditional splash out and things can get a little mixed up.

One other thing I do when I get the "bunker blues" is to practice getting out with a 6 iron.

    Good Luck!

That's a bad feeling!  I always like to feel like I'm whipping the club head through impact out of a bunker.  Kind of a similar feel/thought to the impact zone of a 2 handed backhand in tennis.

It helps me, hopefully it does the same for you

I recently saw a drill for helping bunker play.  First, place a ball in a bunker, and with four fingers, press into the sand behind the golf ball.  Then, do the same but on the other side of the ball.  The fourth marks are your entry and exit points from the sand.  This obviously may not be the best strategy for each type of bunker shot, but it is a good practice drill for more consistency out of the sand.

Also, it is nearly impossible to hit a good golf shot if you are not fully committed to it.  Have confidence, and good things will happen.

    Hope this helps!!!
