    Grindelwald,

Living in Switzerland where golfing in winter is very difficult due to the snow, I'm working a lot in the gym to get ready for the next season.

Which exercises are you working on in the gym to prepare yourself for the next rounds in spring?

    Christian,

I don't really work on any golf specific exercises, mostly just general strength and conditioning exercises (stretching, weights, treadmill), but the one set of exercises I incorporated into my winter workouts a couple years ago is the Tarheel workout (NC Basketball).  It's a set of core exercises using a medicine ball that really gives your core a great workout.  I've included a link to the Mens Health magazine site with the article.

I work up to three sets of each, two to three times a week when I go back into the gym during the winter.

It is important to seek out exercises that are golf-specific. Pumping iron for shoulder/upper body strength is not as essential as working on exercises to increase flexibility and strength of legs and core muscles. There are plenty of machines that rotate the lower back that can easily damage the area. Many body-building exercises can also damage the rotator cuff. You should be able to find some programs from the Titleist Performance Institute at http://www.mytpi.com/exercises. I use rowing instead of treadmill and steppers as more muscle groups are involved and get stretched. Even with that, good technique is important for the benefit.

I have switched from conventional Weight training to Conditional Training. I believe Core Training is essential for longstanding fitness.  Especially as we get older.  I have some degree of weight training involved , although I use kettle balls now and body weight. Squats and Dead lifts are key for lower body &  back strength.  A Key for powering through your  swing and keeping your core stable.  Also not forgetting stretching. I'm not an advocate for running for cardio with the pounding your knee's take.  I love the elliptical and high intensity walk. If you choose a Tabata  style workout, you'll get a great heart pump while working out eliminating an extra cardio session.

Lastly I walk when I play and carry my bag, to me its the best way to get a workout in while enjoying Golf.

    Hi Cody,

You seem to have a pretty good and comprehensive program set out. The only comments that I would share with you are:

    - the importance of cardio for a warm up and cool-down in addition to your regular cardio sessions. In particular, using a 10-15 minute warm up to get your heart rate into a working range of bpm's, and the same for cool down except in reverse (ie: getting your HR down to within 10 bpm's of your starting HR - before warm up).

Both the cardiologist, General Practitioner, and the specialized "heart smart" physical therapists all emphasize the importance of proper warm up and cool down to minimize potential cardiovascular incidents for the long term.

Otherwise, I like your program -- it's very similar to ones that I use with my TPI trainer.

I started working with a TPI certified trainer a year ago and it has made a big difference.  He starts with an assessment then tailors a work out specifically for you and your goals.  Being 52, the increase in flexibility has been a huge benefit.

I would recommend that anyone who has access to a TPI trainer should take advantage of it.

The TPI website is a great tool to use for any kind of fitness or training.  You can get almost anything you can think of for general health and fitness all the way to tour player quality exercises.  Spend some time on there and check out some of the videos and tutorials they have available.  You will be able to find exercises that will fit your goals!
