For all of us Canadian and Northern US golfers, how many of you worked on your fitness during the offseason? I did and it paid off in another way. At work one day, I took a nasty spill on some ice and feet went straight up and I fell flat on my back. I got up and walked away without any problems. I really believe the back strengthening exercises I have been doing saved me on this one. I have been diligently working on flexibility and strenghtening. can't wait to see the results on the course. One book I have been using is "Golf Anatomy" by Craig Davies

Glad you are not hurt, I have been concentrating on getting my back and hip better, a herniated disc has been plaguing me with back pain for years now.
But at the physiotherapist recommendation, I got an inversion table a few weeks ago and it has been life-changing.
I was down to the point that it would take all of my energy to get out of bed, and my lower back would hurt like hell as well as the burning sensation on my right leg. I could not stand for more than a few minutes due to excruciating pain.
Within the first two sessions, I was already feeling much better.
I still have pain, but t is so much less and manageable compared with I had before.
I have not taken a pain pill in over a month, and despite being sore at times, I feel like a million bucks now, much more energy and absolutely much happier.
I am starting to work on stretching and light yoga, so I can get some strength in my core. and lower back.
getting ready for the best golf season of my life

I hope you have the best season yet.
    Thanks for the reply.
    Wishing you the best
  5. I had terrible back pain after a heavy range session or even 18 holes sometimes.

I have TPI screen soon so I should have a program tailored to my swing and with another eye on my back problems.

I'm also attending pilates classes which really helps.

I am a big fan of working out and golf. I think working out should not only be golf specific. I follow a guy called Don Saladino as be trains a bunch of celebrities and Morgan Hoffman. You can trainer with him on an app called playbook. Check him out you will be pleased for not only golf but overall well being

I have a TPI certified instructor that I started with about a year ago. Quality of both life and game have improved. I suppose one metric is snow shoveling- didn’t suffer any strains this year.
  8. I worked on core strength, back, and legs and trained with a speed whoosh as well as some golf yoga. So far I’ve noticed increased distances in my range sessions, about ten yards a club. All just in time for my new iron fitting that I’ve saved for two years to get. Now I’m Anxiously awaiting my AP2’s to arrive!!!

I workout out 5 days a week,(no weekends) doing different parts of the body each day, but I do core 3 times a week so my back & rotation is good & solid for my golf swing. It started with a shoulder injury then a knee injury back in 2013.

I can tell the difference since I started in 2013 I stand at address with less effort because of the strength I have now in my core & legs. I rotate easier & I feel lighter actually. Lol

Wished I had TPI instructor nearby I would like to see what other things I could do to enhance my workouts.

Hari keep up the good work and stay healthy

Besides playing golf, I am also a climber and a runner. In the winter, I climb indoors and besides being a lot of fun, its a great strength and cardio workout. I've noticed that it has helped to improve my focus as well. Also, my finger strength has improved to the point where I can grip the club less tightly than I used to without fear of losing my grip of the club. For obvious reasons, the running is great for overall fitness and helps resist the temptation to ride in a cart and to walk whenever possible. But, whatever you do, its great that you're getting some exercise in the winter. Good luck this season!
  12. Does anyone have any good Youtube videos they have found for off-season golf workouts? I would like some more core strength and flexibility

I suggest looking at the Golf Fitness Academy videos on You Tube which are episodes of the shows Titleist Performance Institute did on The Golf Channel. There are at least 9 seasons and each season has about 10 shows. Not all seasons may be on You Tube but there are more than enough to help you with your workouts.

I also suggest you use the Improve My Game section on TPI’s website. You can filter the exercises so you are only seeing core exercises.

    Good-luck!

Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) is dedicated to golf fitness. MyTPI.com is a resource for specific areas to work on. They also train trainers to become certified instructors. You can use the available videos but getting an evaluation of a trainer of your fitness score will help you focus on exercises that will focus on areas you need to work on. I apply this year-round.

I agree with everyone that fitness is a huge part of playing good golf. I started being serious with workouts a couple years ago and didn't play much golf, and last summer my wife and I played a couples 9 hole scramble and i was over a club longer. I had to get into trackman this last winter to just get a feeling of my new distances. I am about 15-20 yards longer on every club then I was 3 years ago with the exact same clubs.

Living in Switzerland we also have cold winter, so I usually go to the gym 3-4 times a week
To me, it hels me staying more stable in my swing
  17. Curious, you wrote this in April of last year... did you see results on the course?
  18. I've worked in the physical therapy field the last decade and in that time I've really seen the benefits of maintaining an active lifestyle. I work out 5-6 times a week, and I focus on both strengthening and flexibility. Staying in shape has helped my golf game immensly. I rarely get fatigued playing golf and my mechanics hold up throughout the round. I would never recommend to any golfer to focus on a golf specific workout. I would suggest keeping your lower half strong and flexible and keeping your core strong and flexible as well.
I'll often see people using resistance bands and or weights to add resistance to a golf swing at the gym. I don't understand this. Wouldn't this mess with your tempo? When you are out on the course you are not going be swinging the golf club against any resistance. Why practice this? Your muscles adapt to the stress and strain placed upon them and just by going to the driving range and playing golf will help strengthen those specific muscles. It is more important to strengthen your lower half and keep your core strong as well.

I've lost about a 120lbs over last 2 years. Also been weight training 3-4 times a week on my own and go to a physical trainer once a week. The weight loss and muscle gain has been huge. My swing is much more athletic. Physical conditioning has been tremendously better also. Only down side i had last year was trying to golf while lifting heavy. No matter how i timed it i couldn't get good work outs during the week and still be limbered up for a good golf swing on my Thursday league. This year im not going to lift heavy during golf season. Only focus on cardio and some light weight training to try to maintain what ive gained.

Being up north has nothing to do with my workouts.

I started getting more serious about muscle loss when I was really sedentary following carpel tunnel and shoulder surgery. I got really lazy and it showed.

My orthopedic surgeon is a golfer and he suggested I buy duplicate physical therapy equipment to what I was using at his PT room. It cost all of $40.

The small weights and stretches he showed me take all of 20 minutes a day and little by little, I'm feeling better flexibility in my shoulders. Along with my diet, trying to lose some gut, I'm beginning to feel it in my golf game.
