Grip Change... too late?

  1. I have been golfing for about 15-20 years, but have picked up my frequency in the last 5 years. I golf around 45-50 round per year with a handicap of around 12 currently.

I am looking to get into the single digits, and know that my grip is something probably holding me back.

I currently use a ten-finger baseball grip... no overlap between any fingers. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience changing grips or if I should be worrying more about the usual short game/distance control/spin rate instead of worrying about grip? I am 30 years old and am worried that fiddling with my grip will set me back.

    thanks!

I've changed my grip twice (in my 40s & 50s). The hard part about changing your grip is learning to trust it. It will not feel right for quite a while, so if you do decide to change expect some regression in your game. If you decide to change your grip I would suggest working with a PGA teaching pro, since it may have some impact on your swing.
Working on your game (all aspects of your game) never hurts, regardless of changing your grip or not.

What Barry said. If you're going to change, you need to trust it and work on it. And I would work with a PGA teaching pro if you can swing it, best decision you'll ever make.

I've been going to one the last few years and it's the best money I've ever spent. Love learning what's best for my game.

    Good luck!

Just changed my grip after 22 years of being strong. Trust it and it'll work.

I grew up on the 10 finger. Once day in the middle of a round on the 7th fairway i switched to overlap. Personally i think grips as far as 10 finger, overlap, interlock don't really make a difference. What does matter is if its fundamentally matching up with your swing and set up. Overly weak/strong grips can lead to problems! As suggested, go get a lesson, then work it out in the dirt! GOLF!!!!!

It's never too late to change your grip. Good Luck and stick with it.

A new grip us very gard to get used to so go and see your local pro as you wont know whether you need a neutral, strong or weak grip. You will need to persevere with it and practice so that it feel natural.

I changed to an overlap last year and it took awhile to make the adjustment. Am now hitting the ball better. Play with a teaching pro and he has really helped me with the adjustment. Affects me the most with my irons. Need to increase my accuracy and it has helped.

I would go to PGA Teaching pro on that one. A grip change is big and looking to change to a completely different grip style is REALLY big. You say you're a 12 with a 10 finger grip, that's not bad. As I said, I'd have a pro look at you and see what he thinks. Let us know how you make out with it.

I went from 10 finger (when I was just starting) to an interlock 12 years old until I was 25. I tried an overlap and I have been with it since. It feels strange at first when you change and your fingers might get sore hitting balls, but in the long run I like overlap the most. Consult with a pro and get lessons if you have the means to do so. I have never had formal lessons. I just like to find what works for me.

PS. Change is usually not pretty initially.
