  1. I have a relatively ok swing speed. 115-117 mph with driver. 95 mph with 6 iron (188 carry) and 87 with PW (153 carry).

I am a relatively new golfer been playing for 10 months. I feel like i cant consistently delivers the driver therefore if I am lucky and hit one good its 300 yards but normally only about 220 - 240. Are there any drill that can help me deliver the same impact conditions each time?

    Thanks For Your Helps.

That's PGA Tour club head speed. To answer your question: There is no substitute or short-cuts for practice and repetition. There's a reason good ball-strikers hit hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of balls in their lifetimes. Finding the center of the club face is key, and then optimizing launch conditions once you become consistent is the next step. Work on finding center strikes first, without focusing on distance and power.

Thanks alot also ive been told that i deloft the driver too much, does that contribute to my loss distances with the driver?

I have a very closed clubface throughout the swing and the clubface almost points behind me up top with the driver. (very bowed wrist up top)

Although i hit up on the ball (my tees dont break after the swings) my ball flight is really low and stinger-like.

Have you been fitted on a trackman? Need to see that spin number as well as angle of attack to give you a better answer

I always admire a playing partner who shows wear on the low center of the face of his irons, unfortunately, it is very rare, usually a club pro. You won't find it on my irons!

    With respect. Practice, practice, practice.

If you’re swinging at that speed then you’re probably coming in with a negative attack angle “hitting down on the ball” and possibly low in the face. That will balloon your spin numbers and kill your distance. Get your numbers on a Launch monitor and work with a coach and I’m sure you’ll be carrying over 280.
  9. You'll get there. As ChuckZ said, practice. If you are de-lofting driver, that can be part of the issue. Also AoA. Do you know your AoA with driver?

    Bragg Creek,

Guys, you can hit 300 yd stingers at that speed with a driver. He may be able to optimize his AoA, but if some of them are going 300 and most are sub 250, it's not an AoA issue, he's got to be hitting it right out of the bottom of the club.

To the OP, grab some talcum powder, splash the face you your driver, hit a drive that goes 240 and post that pic. I think you're going to find that it barely catches the club. Like some above have said, practice!

    James,

Last statement/question first. "Are there any drills that can help me deliver the same impact conditions each time?"

Have you ever seen a PGA Tour Professional hit a drive into the water or into the woods? Do you think they intended that misjudgment of distance or direction? The Pros spend millions of dollars on coaches, therapists, caddies, etc. just to improve their distance or accuracy. Yet, those same Pros do not hit their drives (or any shots) the same way each time. A golfer who expects the same impact conditions each time should study Moe Norman. It is almost always recommended that a new golfer find a reputable PGA Certified golf instructor and spend some time on the range and find out why/how you are hitting your "perfect shot". Take notes and use it to your advantage to help improve your distance (and accuracy). Document your results, carry in your golf bag, and refer back to your "cards" as a reminder of how you personally hit long drives. Take notes on how you hit straight shots, or fades, draws, hooks, and even the slice (yes knowing how you personally hit a slice can be used to your advantage). Many say that golf is mostly feel. However, as each golfer learns, from time to time, feel may fail. If it happens to you, at least you will have notes (reminders) of how you personally hit each shot.

Your speed is the same as mine before I got old :(. Talk to us about your ball flight. You shouldn't be hitting it that short unless you're beating it into the ground or hitting balls way too high. Are you beating the crown up your club up?

While mere mortals like most of us (under 100 mph club head speed) do best with a positive angle of attack for the best launch angle and spin to max distance, someone like Dustin Johnson and other pros will have a negative angle. The suggestions to find symptoms are accurate. But to correct them you should consider seeing a fitter/pro with experience with stellar speeds like yours. Launch angle is a product of AoA and club head loft. If the AoA being negative works, you may need some adjustments from teeing the ball higher to a higher lofted driver. Only the fitter, Trackman, and you can optimize your driver striking. A positive AoA may be a solution as well, but get the advice from someone watching you and getting data from an electronic device.

    Wow, what a gift!!!
I only wish I had that, but I'd run and get me some good pro help with that if I did.
  15. Firstly, well done on having a fast swing speed.

Have you been on TrackMan to have a look at your numbers? I'd mainly be looking at dynamic loft as well as spin (rpm).

I would guess that you're spinning the ball too much with driver which causes it to 'balloon' instead of penetrate through the air.

Perhaps also you aren't striking the ball great, this would be indicated by ball speed / smash factor. The closer to 1.5 your smash factor is, the better the strike.

    Hope this helps.

Buy some foot spray and spray it on the driver head to see where you are hitting the ball on the clubhead.

With that kind of swing speed you are most likely either hitting it way off center or spinning the crap out of the ball.
  17. You asked for a drill, and a PGA Instructor will have plenty, but here's one. To ensure you are hitting up on the ball, you can place a towel or headcover 8-12 inches in front of your ball and see if you hit it after impact. If you do, you're not swinging up on the ball.

Trackman would show you exactly and can show you the impacts of changes you make, headcover is a cheap and instant way of showing this too.

    Happy swinging!
