    As is typical with U.S. Open course layouts, the rough this week at Torrey Pines is looking extra long and is certain to present challenge to the field. But regardless of whether it’s U.S. Open rough or some thick rough at your local course, getting your ball up and down is vital to shooting lower scores.

    We caught up with Cameron McCormick and Mark Blackburn to take us inside the ropes so they could show us just how crucial hitting fairways will be, and what players might be doing to get up and down from the rough.

    Very interesting. Excellent descriptions after watching the US open these really explain what the players faced.

    I was in San Diego when the 2008 Open was played at Torrey and was able to play the course right afterwards...WOW. I'm a 7 handicapper and if you were 2 inches off the fairway, you were punching out with a wedge, no questions asked. It was brutal. If you tried to be a hero, you would up with a wrist injury at best and your ball went as far as a wedge if you were lucky...

    I played Turnberry a few days before Tom & Javk had the famous duel and the rough was brutal but Jack hit a 1 iron out of it
    The players know not to go in it
    The Fairways are wide enough
