  1. I've got the yips - I use a 54 SM9 10s - I do have a 58 in the bag as well with more bounce and a 50 similar (only really use that for full shots). I did try the Cleveland chipper thing last summer that helped a bit but my mates took the mickey so much - 'grandad chipper' amongst other things - that in the end it had to go. In the meantime the handicap has gone up about 4 and I'm thinning and fatting at least 4 times a round.

    Any advice ?

Hey Andy! Sorry to hear about your yips. You can always try using a less lofted club like a pitching wedge or 9 iron. What sort of grass are you playing on? Some grass can be really difficult to chip on if it’s very thick or grabs the club like Bermuda grass. If that’s the case, try standing closer to the ball and get the toe of the club down to keep the heel from grabbing as much. Without seeing your setup and swing it’s hard to diagnose but try those things and make sure you’re not decelerating the club and maybe that will improve your chipping. Hope this helps!
  3. Stay focused

Do some practice on the chipping green to gain confidence

Treat your wedge around the green like a putter and it will become your best friend

    Practice with a purpose

The biggest thing I did was make sure to keep my weight on the left foot, and practice in the backyard with some nets to chip to. I practice 4 positions, coming back to my knee, hip, shoulder, and full. By doing this I figured out my timing, by going back only to my knee and then striking the ball, then farther back to my hips, ect, I come through the ball the same but it helped me work on contact with the ball because I was sliding under the ball alot. I dont know if this will help, but it helped me.

Check your technique. I find that my contact gets a little sketchy when I am not rotating as much and start getting to ‘army’s and handsy.’ Trying thinking about rotating more and keep the club outside the hands going back. When my mechanics are off a little I feel a little yippy.’

Also, on tighter lies that make you nervous, try ‘putting with loft’ if you can. Essentially a putting stroke with a club other than putter whil getting the club up on its toe. Plenty of videos about this technique.

Every winter I practice chipping, and practice more chipping, and when I'm done I practice more chipping. Then when I finally get out on the course, it all disappears.
This year my goal is to get on the green in regulation. It's my only workable solution!

This is something we practiced at the clinic I am attending on Tuesdays. The pro who was teaching this particular aspect asked us to take either an eight or seven iron out of our bags. No wedges. Use them like you were putting. You want to get the ball on the green and get it rolling towards the hole. Of course it takes practice but it does work.

You see those commercials on TV to stop the YIPS and misses and get the ball closer with a chipper. Why buy another club, use what is in your bag. Those chippers about the same as an eight iron which has 33*-38* of loft in most sets (blades to forged forgiving), are just as effective and have the same feel as the rest of you set. A bit more loft than a putter which normally has a 4* loft. Get it on the ground, rolling, on line. This is based on the info from the teaching pro who helped us this week.

And do not forget to use your normal putting stroke. Very important.

I have felt your pain before Andy.

There are some good suggestions from other TT members. I went and took a few lessons to help me with wedge issues.

Michael Breed has a Titleist lesson which is great for chips

    I

When I start to thin and chunk my wedge shots (which is often for me) I just go with my putter. Unless Im more than 20 yards from the flag then I just bump and run it with a 7i.
  12. Hard to say without knowing the exact problem, but weight forward and don't decel would be the 2 basics I'd start with.
