This year has been a year of trial and error for me. Physical therapy for my lower back due to scoliosis trying to develop a stronger core and taking pressure off my spine and decrease the pain. It has been effective in increasing my flexibility with some less pain and medication. Have taken steps with lessons to slow down my golf swing to take even more pressure off the back. Lately breathing has been an issue. Asked my coach if it could be affecting my iron play. Seems when I need to hit a short iron, I seem to loose focus, because I just cannot breathe thru my nose. The humidity has already arrived along with the tourists. He said absolutely. Always looking for anything that can help physically and medically. Nasal blockage, one almost completely closed, and had reconstructive surgery on Wednesday. To many broken noses playing basketball over the years. Already seeing some results. Supposed to go back to see my surgeon on July 10th to have the splints taken out and the brace removed. My boss has had this and said he wished he had had it done years ago. Hope to be back on the course on Friday, July 14th, if all goes as expected. Has been one of those years. Things happen, part of the circle of life. Am waiting on the T series release, so I can work on the new T350s and get ready for the TT event in November. Hakuna matata.

I know the the day I stop breathing that I will likely have to give up this game of golf.

The way you put it, Yes. Breathing technique is important and surgery can improve your ability to focus. When I completely stop breathing guess it will be over for me, also.

Aside from agreeing with Dale, exhaling when preparing to swing should help relax you core. Except when the 2.5 micron smoke particles are over 200 ppm (thanks Canadian wildfires) mouth breathing should be ok. On my worst pollen days I live with runny eyes and nasal stuffiness that no non-drowsy antihistamine can handle.
  5. That smoke is horrible. Sadly it seem like it will continue for a while.
  6. I just breath and don't have any issues focusing my game either

Someone did as me many years ago if I breathed in or out on my backswing to which I replied I breathe !!!

But do you inhale or exhale while putting? Think about that next time on the practice green!

I have to giggle a little about this breathing thing. I too have thought about it but the more golf you play the more areas of improvement you search out.

Tom Watson said he didn't start winning until he could control his breathing. I hate to use the term "better players", but it applies here as well. It's part of my routine, especially the long shots. All golfers should incorporate consistency in their breathing habits during the round/shot. I have to control my emotions during the good and bad parts of a round. I'm typically in a moderate exhale during the downswing.
  11. Best wishes on healing, I too have been sidelined from golf for way too long due to back injury and surgery. Miss it so bad. I also had the nose surgery (septum) and it was life changing. All the best.
  12. I did not realize until someone mentioned it to me that I sometimes took a breathe at the top of backswing! Now I just do a couple of deep breathes over the ball at address….seems to help…

    Cheers!

Went back for my follow-up yesterday post surgery. After the bee stings of cutting away the stitches and the breathing in and out as he pulled out the stents, I have not breathed thru my nose like this in many many years.
Got a clearance to return to playing golf. Playing on Friday. Probably be the last time until sometime in August. My wife is having a knee replaced on Monday. Need to take care of her for a while. Told her with this new nose, will walk with her around the neighborhood with her rehab. Hope to get back in the grove in August and some new T350 irons. Got get ready for you guys in November. So looking forward to seeing everyone. Just hope nothing else falls apart. ha..ha..ha..
  14. Call me a weird, but I take a big breath tgrough my mouth at address. Helps stabilize my core, which in turn helps my back I find. I’ve added into my routine this season, and so far it’s really helped with post game back pain.

I have used breathing and visualization techniques often when playing. Always seem to work for me!

After 50 years of study I've determined that the odds of improving your game are much higher when breathing as opposed to when you stop breathing.
