  1. Hey yall! I've been playing less than a year now and been upgrading my set little at a time. My main concern is iron work, I've got my driving and fairway woods dialed in. I seem to have a problem hitting fat on irons alot but I try ro correct it I end up thinning or completely hitting the top really bad or even lose distance if I hit it at all. Any help would be appreciated it as far as drills to help with ball striking and distance! Thanks!

Hi, DMcbride! My favorite drill for this would be tee’d up half swings. Tee up a ball level with the top of the grass on the range tee and then place another tee or tee fragment approximately 1/2” in front of the ball. Practice half swings (or even small pitch shots to start) hitting the ball first, but also making contact with the object in front of it. It’s a bit of an exaggeration, so don’t necessarily overthink it, but it does help groove the bottom of the swing arc better than most drills I’ve come across.

Great suggestion!!!!!! During a lesson with our head instructor this year in a group setting (PGAHOPE), he gave us a drill very similar to that except he placed to tees in the ground on each side of the ball. Same principal except to also keep your swing in line. With a bit of work, I agree it can improve your tempo and ability to hit the ball first, straighter with more consistency.

    I. myself and me have a tendency to hit the "big ball" first at times. My fitter says it is because I do the Tennessee two step when I am setting up to hit a shot and loose my ball position. Happy feet is bad juju. =( Save it for the ballroom.

I've had the same issue for a good portion of this season. Fat/Heavy shots can be attributed to either being too steep, and/or not controlling your low point.

When I reviewed my swing I noticed that I wasnt extending my trail leg in my backswing which was inhibiting me from transitioning my weight forward and getting my low point forward. I actually made a Youtube video (link below) about this because once I started focusing on extending that trail leg my ball striking improved significantly.

Check out the video and record your swing because you might be having the same issue. Best of luck!

Great suggestions. The usual problem you see is not transferring your weight enough off your back leg. This has your club hitting behind the ball. You want your swing to bottom at the ball or just in front of the ball’ centerline.
