    Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has tips on how to take the club away while keeping it in front or parallel with my body. Right now I bring it back behind my body and come slightly over the top with the downswing.

I have a golf instructor who stands behind me with a pool noodle. Going back I need to stay outside the noodle. Coming back down I need to stay inside the noodle. If I mess up he whacks me with the noodle.
And I pay him for that?

TMI. Sounds like you like it…

Good news there are many ways to help a golfer improve technique. Most of us need various dope slaps for the one that gets through. May not be the first instructor we try.

I have the same issue but I've been able to correct it by starting the swing with the club face outside about a quarter of a swing.
In other words I take my hands back parallel to my waist and then stop and then repeat. Start with Short swings first.
Everybody is different but Barry has a good point.

Would recommend seeing a teaching pro. Sounds like something that he could help you with rather quickly. Just like you, we are mainly golf enthusiasts and Titleist loyalists, not golf pros of instructors. When I have issues such as that I see my local pga instructor at the course where I play and it has to do with my shoulders, alignment and overswinging. But that is me. They need to identify you particular issue.

**** Barry, mine says slow down Chuck. Seems I have a need for speed. But he is very helpful.

Practice your backswing in the house with your wife's favorite lamp just behind and to the right of you - and make sure you miss the lamp!!!
  8. I did tried doing that and i accidentally hit the lamp. I was in the doghouse for a week. Lol

A simple drill I (not a PGA pro) have people do is figure out or imagine how the arms and hands work in the backswing without any body rotation. I walk them through it step by step. The left wrist flattens and hinges while the right wrist cups and hinges, the left arm stays straight while the right arm bends at the elbow and raises. When they understand that they can add rotation. Seems to help most understand how to keep everything correct in the backswing.

Google 'golf tip under arm stick drill'.... alignment stick in the arm pit of your trail arm keeping arms and body connected.

    Good luck!

Read point number two where you start your take away by turning your lead shoulder

Try to move your left shoulder (the entire left shoulder area) forward as your first move. So it will move in the direction you are facing. Watch any tour pro, they all do this and it is a great way to start your swing. Tom Watson talks about it in his book, he just describes it slightly differently. Carl Lohren's famous book "One Move To Better Golf" talks about it in-depth.

Assuming your set up/posture and tempo is in order, this move puts you in a great position for the rest of the swing to run on automatic.

    Hope you find a fix!

That's a tough habit to break, swinging the club behind you, and coming over the top. I tend to do the same thing, 50 years running. I like the suggestion earlier about taking the club 1/4 of the way back, almost as a pre shot routine. What I try and do to avoid "getting stuck" at impact (which happens occasionally for us "over the top crowd"), is to make sure my hips rotate and clear, and finish high.

    Hope this helps. God luck.
