Anyone have any good stories about visiting the Scotty Cameron Gallery in California? Curious what the experience is like getting fit and picking out a new putter. Do they have a good selection of putters to choose from and/or do you get to pick what you want made?

Great experience.. Joey is one of the best fitters, the staff doesn't try to hard-sell you anything. There are plenty of Tour and standard version of putters, accessories and apparel. Back to the fitting, it's the best thing you can do. The cameras and technology is the same as the Studio (where the pros go to see Scotty). Scotty may even be there as he drop in from time to time.

I am booked for next tues (26th) - I am so pumped! I have managed to visit the gallery previously but could not arrange a fitting on a short schedule - this trip it all seemed to work out perfectly.

    Will report back afterwards!

Jason, looking forward to your report back! Curious what putters they have there to buy and what kind of price tag is on them. I'm guessing not everything is the $3-5k they post online. I'd assume there's so special ones in that $1-2k area.

Love how you know about getting fit for a putter. I frown when I see a guy buy a putter for $350.00 and I ask him if he was fitted for it. He looks at me and says.."Well no.. I just like it."

Funny that you mention getting fit for a putter. I went into my local golf shop last summer looking to maybe buy a Scotty putter. The guy there talked me into going through a fitting so I did. After the fitting the guy said the following, "you are a really good putter but you wouldn't know because you've been using the wrong putter all your life." I ended up going with his recommendation and am I glad I did. My putting totally changed and I easily dropped 3 or 4 putts per round off my score just from using a putter that fit me. I now recommend that if you are looking for a putter to be fit for it.

All, apologies for being so tardy in reporting back but I have been a travelling road show both with work and across spring break. The Scotty Cameron Gallery visit was nothing short of spectacular!

I arrived a few minutes early and was greeted by my fitter – Nick Geyer. Nick made me feel like a VIP as he gave me a quick tour of the facility and explained the history of the gallery and how they came to exist. We talked about my goals and objectives for booking the session. Nick emphasized that while the gallery certainly can coordinate the purchase of a putter following the session, this is not their goal, rather their goal is to ensure I walk out with better understanding of my putting stroke, and which style of putter and specifications best match that putting stroke. I will say that while this is not an instructional session per se, it is IMHO impossible not to learn a thing or two working with fellas like Nick with the equipment available. The sessions are 2 hours in length and booked well out – I was able to secure a spot through a cancellation so don’t hesitate to get yourself on the wait list if they cannot confirm your desired date.

Entering the fitting room I was a kid in a candy store. The room is set up with high speed / high def cameras to catch every conceivable angle of both the putting stroke and the roll. Seriously there must be 8 or 10 of them set up. Large monitors are used to review the camera footage at various speeds right down to frame-by-frame advance. They use a special proprietary putting surface and have dozens of examples of putters available to try. If required (and Nick did several times) they will go back to the gallery and obtain a specific length/loft or style for you to try.

What amazed me was the level of detail paid to the putter / ball interaction and how this was affected by not only the putting stroke but the style and length of putter being used. We very quickly confirmed that the length of putter for me was correct (interesting as I arrived convinced that it was too short – I use a 34-inch putter currently) and proceeded to evaluate the difference in ball behavior using both the Newport 2 style I was using and a mallet style. Nick pointed out alignment aids built into the putters I never knew existed and how they are best used. I was fascinated to find that the ball was taking a hop following a stroke with my current set-up and I was imparting back spin on the ball with my current putter which made the eventual roll-out line inconsistent. Nick discovered that my putter had been bent somehow over the years to almost 5 degrees of loft. Once Nick reset the putter to factory specs this no longer occurred, and the ball reacted accordingly.

We then got a tad less scientific and discussed the emotions of putting. At the end of the day the putter just has to look and feel right and very quickly we ruled out both mallets and black putters (which I thought I would like) neither of which I seemed to comfortable over top of for whatever reason. We discussed grips and how that played not the stroke and finally weight. We talked about inserts vs milled putters, smooth vs textured and Tour only putters vs commercially available putters and what makes a Circle-T special.

At the end of the day I left the store with a newfound appreciation of the putting stroke had how the putter-ball interaction affects the roll – oh, and a new custom painted Select Newport to replace my 2014 Select Newport 2 (which received a new grip just to make it feel better that it was being replaced!).

I cannot recommend the visit highly enough and while a bit pricey, given the facilities, the expertise of the staff and the overall experience we worth the price. I would post pictures but for some reason I cannot quite figure that one out.

    Hope this helps - Jason

Going this Thursday March 28th and can’t wait. I have been through many putters and I’m interested to see what my “perfect” putter will be.
