What’s the closest you’ve ever been to a hole in one? For those of us who aren’t fortunate enough to have gotten one?

Mine, I hit a 6 iron on a par 3. It it the front of the green, rolled, rolled, rolled, two inches away from the hole. In disbelief, I fell backwards... into a fire ant hill.

Anyone have any good stories about a near miss?

I almost had my second last year on the par 3 shoot out at Taylor Meadows last year.
We played the modified course where every hole was modified to be a par 3.
on 17th, one of the actual 4 par 3s on the course I bladed my 9 iron for 120-yard 3/4 shot, pretty much a block but with a massive slice, it curved back to the green and rolled a couple of inches from the front of the cup stopping a foot away.
It was one of those holy cows, that would have been amazingly lucky.
I had already have had my first hole in one earlier on the year, but it goes to show even bad shots can have good results.

I've had several, but the one that stands out was at Sentry World in Stevens Point, WI. Played in a scramble. The #16 par 3, the "Flower Hole". A hole in one was worth $10K. My shot landed, bounced, spun/bit, rolled 2 feet and rimmed the hole, sitting 2" away. Instead of $10K I got a shirt.

Had a hole in one at Glencoe GC when I was 16 at New Trier West golf team try outs--the coach (a jerk who shall remain unnamed) didn't believe me at first, but I had 3 witnesses in my 4-some to vouch for me. Needless to say, I made the team.

I've had 3 hole in ones, but 2 near misses standout; Braintree Municipal,5th hole, playing in a 2 man team event with a college buddy, quite a few years ago. It was a hole in one prize hole worth 10k. I forget the actual distance but I hit 7 iron with a slight draw.As soon as the ball started to descend, the two spotters both stood up and watched. It just missed going in, settling a foot directly behind the pin.

The other was the 16th at The Meadow (Peabody MA), 193 from the black markers, elevated tee. I was playing with my son. I hit 5 iron, right at it. The ball hit the very bottom of the flag stick, dead flush, and ended up coming back off the green 15 yards.
