Need your guy's opinion. I shot 65 yesterday at one of my local courses that I have played for years. It broke my personal best of 66 at that course from a few years back. With that said the cups on the holes were raised. I was thinking after the round what role that would have played in the round. I hit 15 greens in the round and was not ramming putts at the hole which seems to be the way people are playing the raised cups. What do you guys think raised cups do for your score? I made two putts in the 10 to 15 foot range. Outside of that I only made putts five/six feet and in (and still missed one of those). Let me hear your thoughts.

  2. I am sure some people are gonna say some jargon that will tear down your accomplishment in person or on this forum...bottom line is you followed the rules given and shot your low. You have to have a ton of things going your way to get into the 60s not just ramming putts...congrats! Be proud, regardless of the pandemic or what people think/say.

I personally would be very happy with the ball striking, greens in regulation, etc.
I would know if I was playing well or not, and obviously you were. However, I cannot take much from playing and worrying about my score until the course is back in a normal state, meaning when the cups are back to normal.
I congratulate you on a great round, but can't put it in my personal record book, sorry. Just my opinion, not a fact! LOL

Completely fair. I'm not sure what to think of it. That's why I asked for everyone's opinion. Thanks for responding.

Great score. USGA says they are counting these scores during this pandemic for handicapping.

Now that the doctor has released me from my surgery, I have chosen not to play until I can play golf as it was intended to be played. I have not played since the first week in December. I work on my chipping and pitching in my backyard.

Answering your question: If the ball bounces off the cup, and rolls away, well? Also depends on which side of the cup it hits? A number of variables with the cup up? If it taps the cup, I'm pretty sure it would go in, another story =).... Remembering that golf is a gentleman's game..... With respect to all choices.....

Thanks Chuck. I thought about this after my round and I was not ramming putts at the hole all day. I played the day before at a different course where the pins were also raised and caught myself not paying close enough attention to speed thinking I didn't have to worry about it with the cups raised. When I played the next day I told myself to just putt like you normally would. With the exception of maybe one putt I made solid contact with the cups on my putts (at least the ones I hit the cup).

I think you bring up a great point about the spirit of the game. Above all else machine gunning putts at the hole all day has to become a joke at some point.

Congratulations on the score, that is a fantastic accomplishment regardless of the situation.
  10. If you can score 66 in normal course conditions I wouldn't be too disheartened only one shot in it for 65.

I'm guessing your capable of getting one shot better.

66 is unbelievable in my mind because I'm not in your league on the course.

No matter what people say you still scored 66 and that's up there

Just enjoy your golf and keep scoring stupidly low.

Thank you. It's a course I have played my whole golfing life. I'm not gonna act like local knowledge doesn't play a role. There is definitely a comfort level that I don't have many other places. That certainly doesn't hurt.

According to the USGA these scores all count for posting so I say it counts. The other day I holed out a bunker shot after moving the ball out of a footprint where the ball came to rest. Our local rule for no rakes in the bunker is lift, clean and place no nearer the hole, which is one of the acceptable alternatives with no rakes in the bunker. Furthermore, we have the foam pool noodle pieces in the hole which are very springy. If we feel that the ball would have gone to the bottom of the cup under normal circumstances, we count it, which is why I prefer the raised cup over the pool noodle.
  13. Simply put, you shot what you shot given the conditions of the course. Take your 65 and run with it. Nice playing!

A 65 cannot just be luck or taking advantage of the rules. It's a heck of a score and you should be proud! Plus you now know you can do it so it will be "easier" when we are back to "real" golf...

That's a tough one Drew. If the USGA says it counts, who am I to say otherwise. You shot your best round under conditions none of us have ever played under.I know you would have rather holed putts, but that choice was taken out of your hands.

    Congrats on the 65.

If it makes you feel better, the best round I ever played had a temporary green. It was 25 years ago and it still drives me nuts...
