  1. Hello all,

looking for advice to finish my golf bag setup. debating on a 48* gap wedge or 5w ?

    currently using

    Driver - cally rogue 9 (stiff) 3 fairway wood - tsi 2 4 hybrid - tsi 2 5-pw - T300 52*- vokey sm8 56*-vokey sm8 60*- vokey sm8 putter- odyssey #7 o-works

    thanks for any advice !

  2. Me personally i would go for a 48° wedge. I think the PW of the t300 is 43° so there is a 9° gap to your 52°. If you know your yardage and can manage that gap then fair enough, for me I would want a 48° wedge in there just for ease. Depending on the loft of your 3 wood and hybrid would a 5 wood actually make any difference. Maybe try to weigh up where you need the help. If you have good distance top end of the bag but struggle further down then throw another wedge in and visa versa if you are good from a certain distance in but lack top end distance then try a 5 wood.
  3. Or another idea is maybe look at dropping the 60° and then having a 48° and 5 wood. You can always work on opening up the face of your 56° to help losing the 60°

You pitching wedge is a 43* which leaves a gap of 9* between your 52*. A 48* Vokey would work well to fill in that gap or purchasing the W wedge that would match the set. I have a set of T300s an love the wedges that come with it because they are very forgiving. As to carrying a 5 wood? I carry a 16.5* (TSI2) which carries more accurately and farther that my previous 917F 15*. Really love it then I have an 818h1 17* and 816h 21*. I favor the Titleist hybrids because of the distance, carry and accuracy. Of course I went to a Titleist fitter when trying to make this decision. I have the new TSI3D 10.75* with a Fujikura 661 TR stiff shaft and at 75 it is all I can handle with my Prov1 left dot. Best day 260. Seeing is believing. Just sayin'.

Even though I have Vokey 48 - 54 - 58 wedges, only you will know if there distance gaps in your set. As noted, most of us would have a distance hole from the 43 PW to the 52 degree W.
Is there a distance that the 5W would solve? Would you use either or both 48 wedge or 5W more or less than the 60 wedge?

    The T 300 48 deg. wedge.
  8. I think you should go for the 48 because it would better fill out your bag. I think there is too much of a gap between 52 and 9-iron.

I believe the 48° wedge will be more versatile. I see a 5 wood being used more when distance is an issue which can be solved easily by playing different tees. Wedges on the other hand can help with tighter approaches to the green and IMO are better tools for scoring.

You can go with both setups...I have different mixes depending upon the courses I'm playing and conditions. Sometimes I'll carry a 5 wood and leave out my 60 (keep a 56 & 52 with one type of bounce say for firm courses and sand). Other times, I'll carry my 52, 56, and 60 that has a different bounce for certain softer conditions...For example, wet courses, I tend to carry fewer wedges and will carry my 5 wood since roll out will be minimal and holding greens is easier. So, I'll usually have fewer scenarios where a wedge would be useful. If I'm close to the green (within 20 yards), I'll chip with as low as an 8 iron with slower greens. I play T200s and got the 48 that came with it.

I would lean toward the extra wedge. You can always adjust the 3w and 4h to make stronger or weaker lofts to manage the gap at the top of the bag. A 9 degree difference is a big gap to have at the bottom of the bag. Can you manage that gap, sure you can, but do you need to or really want to is the question.

How often would you find yourself hitting 5w during your round? How often do you think you would use a 48 degree? My guess is you would find more places to use a 48 degree than a 5w or 4h.

I will say it also depends on wou play mostly. If your course is really long and you have longer shots into par 4 or 5's and longer par 3's then you might with the 5w, same if the course is really tgo ight and driver is not a smart play off the tee. If the course you play is shorter or more forgiving, the 48 degree is probably better as you can be more aggressive off the tee to give you wedges coming in.

It's really personal preference. I carry 3w and 5w then a U505 4i and I have a 44, 48, 53, and 57 wedge set up. I like the extra wedge for my game as it gives me more options from 145 and in and around the greens.
  12. It all depends on your gapping and the course(s) you play. I would think the 48 would give you the most help. It is much more of a 'scoring club' than 5w - unless you regularly have a 5w yardage as the 2nd shot on a par 5.

Richard I enjoyed your question because I asked the same question when I bought my set 5 years ago. The members of Team Titleist gave me some great advice then as you have received now. It sounds like you are at the point where you want to buy either the 5W or 48* wedge. The simplest answer is to ask yourself how often during the course of a round do you find yourself at 5W distance vs 48* distance. I think you will find that you will be at the 48* distance more frequently and thus that is the club you should buy. Some other food for thought. If you choose to get the 5 wood I would suggest looking at a similar degree hybrid. I found that easier to hit and better out of the rough than the 5 wood. Best of luck with your new set.

I faced a similar decision with my T200 PW also being 43. In the end, I replaced the 52° wedge with a 50° gap wedge. I have slightly larger gaps between the wedges (43/50/56) but I also like hitting 3/4 and 1/2 wedge shots so this seems to work for me.
  17. Wedge.
You’ve a fairway wood and hybrid with your irons they’ll
get you down the fairway, and hybrid help get out of second cut. But having plenty of options from 100yds in is more vital in my view to a good score.
