How does everyone stay in golf shape during the off season. What exercises and training do you do?

Fortunately, I live in an area of the country where year 'round golf is possible. On the other hand, this winter season, we've been hit with very wet weather which takes more time for ground crews to keep the courses open.

I have a couple of swing trainers that I like to use indoors; they help keep my muscles loose. I use an indoor rowing machine to keep my endurance up since I like to walk and carry. My home course has a nice short game practice area and I do my best to get out there when I can.

I used a TPI certified instructor to set up an age appropriate workout routine that is focused on core strength and flexibility. I alternate that with speed swing or an hour at a simulator I have an Aussie Shepherd and we walk 2-3 miles 5-6 days a week. (Ok, when the wind chill was-34 F we kept it down to a little over a mile).

All the TPI exercises are on line to review. I’ve only had to get some small exercise equipment. None of the equipment was over 50-70 dollars.

I try to hit up a golf a simulator twice a month.
  7. I do a combination of mobility and functional strength training. Helps that I'm a personal trainer, haha. Biggest key I've found is doing a lot of work on joint stability, mobility, and then working on a well balanced strength program. Don't only train the muscles you use for your swing. Train the opposing groups as well and it will help you prevent injury.

When healthy, I usually play three to four times a week and play with my teacher three to four times a month. Like my right honorable friend on the west coast in Northern California we do not have an off season. Since the renovation of our course and the raising of the fairways it is very seldom that the course is closed. Do cart path only when we get over 3" of rain. A few low spots. Otherwise it drains real well. We do close when a Hurricane comes thru or on Holidays.

During the winter in Asheville, NC, the course is open on most days barring snow. To stay fit, I run, lift weights and workout with speed sticks. I putt on a putting mat in my basement as well. I have no excuses not to be ready when serious play begins in the spring.
  10. When I was stationed in Alaska and only got to play for a few months a year, I used the orange whip a lot to be able to keep swinging and use
the golf muscles. I also just did simple golf related exercises with resistance bands.

Garage sim.. been testing the RCT models of ProV1 and AVX this winter… I’ve also found out that I actually enjoy winter golf… maybe I’m part Husky
  12. Resistance band workouts...flexibility workouts...stretching...I have hip problems in the past from not properly warming up my hips so stretching and flexibility is a big part of my routine all season long.
couple of people i follow on IG that have great workouts are - codywescottgolf & stallionfitness. Check them out.

I have been using the Golf Forever Swing Trainer and associated workout program. Extremely impressed with this program and its emphasis on strength training and injury prevention.

Am sure my bad habits will change after going to the physical therapist this week for my back issues. Might even help my bad hips. Could even help my golf, couldn't hurt.

Am excited with my first visit with the Sports Clinical Specialist this morning. Will be seeing him twice a week. Starting with the basics and that is at the hips and will be working up to my back. Keeping it simple. This dude has worked with golfers at Temple and Rutgers, as well as other Athletes. Also worked for the Philadelphia Eagles. I do like his plan of attack and hoping to getting back to hitting wedges in about six weeks. Good chemistry and session.

Thankfully here in AL we can play every month of the year (it was 68 and sunny this past weekend in Jan!) however my club is shut down for a year while we renovate the course. I've been trying to focus on getting into shape by getting stronger and more flexible. Interested in hearing from anyone who may have a specific plan
  17. Last off-season, I started doing some speed training using The Stack System. It has helped me increase my swing speed and overall club distances. It has now become a staple in my current off-season training regime.

Im lucky enough that i can golf 12 months of the year, although it can get fairly cold and snowy between november and march but it usualy doesn’t last too long.

If the courses do close though there is a few places with indoor sims that i can hire iut with a few buddies which is great fun
  19. I try to stay in shape year round, much easier than trying to get back into shape. A lot of walking, elliptical, body weight exercise, and, if the weather permits, some chipping in the back yard and swinging the Orange Whip.
