I have a U505 in the bag. Was a hybrid player for a long time but when I went to TPI a few years back, my fitter Lucas Bro, told me there are hybrid players and there are iron players.

I fell into the iron side. I got the U510 then the update of U505. I love it. I hit it a lot, off different lies as well.

I do hit it better than a hybrid.

Each player is different and getting properly fit will help determine if you’re a hybrid or iron player.

It depends on the courses you play, do you need it off the tee or on some par 3’s?

What’s easier to stop on a green for you (high launch or low launch), are you looking for distance vs. Control? What’s easier to hit for you?

I typically used a hybrid for 200-220 shots, or steep downhill par 4s where placement is key. The course I played has winter tees so it played shorter than normal where I could hit it over my driver. Had nice high flight and soft landing. I can definitely see it as a punch club to keep under the wind or advance on a misplaced tee shot.

Like the height and flight of the hybrid and it is more versatile from various cuts of the fairway and roughs. Works very well for me off the tee also. Anything longer than a five iron (22*), it is a hybrid (21* and 18*). Again, it is all about it is an individual thing. Results.

What is most important is what works for you. So great that Titleist has so many options that allow us to set up our individual bags to maximize our own strengths and minimize our weaknesses.

I'm way more consistent with a hybrid than a long iron, so it's an easy choice for me.

I had very similar results. I do think it's a personal finding and comfort level and not a one size fits all solution.

I always hit the hybrid. Just a personal thing I guess. I don't carry a driving iron. I don't even carry anything more than a 6 iron. Titleist hybrids ate the best.

Hybrid for me as well. Was not any more complicated than it filled the gap and had better (more consistent) results during my fitting. I tried both (several versions of each actually) and was fit to the hybrid. YMMV but I strongly recommend you get fit before you commit. Ideally on real grass if at all possible.

My two cents.

I am a Driving Iron person. But I’m noticing the huge amount of hybrids and extra 5 and 7 woods in peoples bag.
There are a smattering of bags that have a 2 or even 3 iron in them these days. Most sets I see start at a 4 iron or even 6 iron.
My advice (and this is just me), is test all of them. Long gone are the days of feeling insecure about carrying a 5 or 7 wood. It’s now (as it always has been) about scoring and shot shaping. I’m more than likely (as your playing partner) going to be more impressed by shot gape and result and come to look at what club you hit and possibly think about if that club needs to be in my bag, than think oh it’s a 7 wood, no thanks…

I have more distance with hybrids, but in my fitting I was much more accurate with irons and utility irons. My 4 iron is 22 degrees, then a utility iron at 18 and hybrid at 16. That combination was worked out in my last fitting.

For me, its easier to the the hybrid up in the air and get the carry distance. "driving irons" probably do same distance but I just can't get the carry!

When I was fit, I tried the hybrids. Iron play is a strength for me, and as we talked about the various options available, I then hit the U irons. I took home a U505 3i.

One thing that my fitter did help me with, the iron is going to work better from the rough, in scrambling situations, and I have the option of a stinger/punch shot more with the 3i.

I think you would get more carry out of a hybrid, but for me the 3i was a better choice for my game.

I have a U510 3 iron I hit off the tee on tight holes and to me I feel it’s more consistent then a hybrid and I can hit a lower ball to drive it into the wind to keep it from ballooning up.

I’ve had a similar experience. I’m a low handicap player, and I found the only time I pulled a hybrid was when I had a tough lie in the rough and a lot of room left or right. I oftentimes found my hybrid was simply too high and spinny to play from the fairway or tee, and left me a much larger dispersion than a driving iron would. I have a TMB driving iron now and I love it, I’ll pull it from multiple lies and yardages. I find it much easier to work the ball with an iron and it just makes more sense for my game!

I'm much better with irons, so when I upgraded my clubs this last time, I ditched the hybrids and went with a D, 3W, 2i set-up. Then I start my iron set with the 4i. Working well so far for me, so it's really about what you hit most consistently... finding the right feel for you.

I have 3 of the Titleist "utility" long irons. 2,3,4 and love all of them. Always been a long iron man, my favorite club was always a 1 iron. I do have a TS2 2 hybrid, turned down to 16deg that I put in sometimes instead of the 2 iron, but that is based on the course and conditions.

I swapped my hybrid out for a driving iron. Significant difference, everyone’s different though! Nature of the game and it’s a beautiful thing
