Counterfeit clubs have been covered well for over 10 years. In this issue of Golf magazine there is another illegal activity to be aware of. Actual new clubs are showing up at prices too good to be true. Available on line in small quantities from “small” sellers, the price is usually the only clue. The merchandise is being stolen from shops with basically no cost for the seller. They don’t even need to sell at 50% off full retail. Even 80% of retail is enough to attract buyers of a $600 driver or a $400 putter at $499 or $299 for new clubs. While authentic they are creating incentives to continue to steal or shoplift for later online/out of the trunk sales. Hard to pass up a good deal. Hopefully the top 5 OEM’s can promote awareness so golfers can disincentive this activity. I’d hate to lose my local Premier fitting center due to major $$$ loses due to theft.

  2. How are they stealing the clubs

The pga superstores have all drivers either in locked cabinets or a security tag etc

My guess would be an inside job. I've worked retail in the past and unfortunately there are a lot of dishonest people just out to make a quick buck.

A golf course I worked at got 7 Titleist drivers stolen one Sunday. A guy walked in with a fake cast on his leg saying he was looking for a gift for his son. He waited until it was busy and put the drivers in his pants leg with the cast. He did this twice in the same day, while he was captured on video. No one knows who he was.

as a matter of fact make sure your own clubs don't get stolen.
as much as I don't like it I buy 3rd party head covers and put them on my woods and putter.
if you leave your new OEM head covers on, thieves will take notice and steal them while your on the range or in the restroom. Protect your investment.

I always use aftermarket or logo less Titleist Head Covers for that exact reason!
Don't advertise whats in the bag...I also don't put any brand announcing stickers on my car either...Don't want to give anyone a clue what's being hauled around in the trunk.
