    Good day all,

I just want to put out a public service announcement to wear sunscreen on the course, or any time outside, for that matter. My dermatologist has me doing a full-face flourouracil treatment and it is miserable. I do not even want to look outside, much less try to play golf for at least a month or two...I hope none of you folks ever have to go through this!

Thanks for the reminder and hope all goes well with your treatment. I do my best to protect myself from the harmful effects of the sun by wearing appropriate facial sunscreen, proper head wear (bucket hats, Aussie style hats, etc...) and arm sleeves designed for sun protection. Another thing to consider is even on those cloudy days, the harmful UV rays can still burn.

One of my buddies had that and he said it was not the most pleasurable experience he had had. He now wears sleeves, Aussie Hats and lots of cream. Guess that I have been blessed. No have not, but thanks to Titleist Aussie hats my dermatologist gives me a clean bill of health during my annual visit. She continues to tell me that I have the best skin she has seen for a man of my age, 77. Living in the lowcountry of SC they are a must. Grew up on a working farm, spent years on the beaches, in the hot sun (no sunscreen), played softball for 26 years in Europe, Oklahoma, Tennessee and South Carolina. Have been playing golf for 39 years in SC and never a spot. Must be my German ancestry? Take care and listen to the dermatologist, I have for over thirty years.

No doubt, it’s a bi%$#. I have a healing site on my back after basal cell removal. Been a month and still closing. Previously had a spot on my nose removed. Next the easy part (?) - doing my semi-annual 5FU treatment on pre-cancerous lesions on face, ears, and arms. With some flexibility for time, will start after the December TTI, and hopefully will look better by Xmas photos. While on 5FU, the burning is accentuated by sun exposure. A benefit of WI winters?
Take care and only worship the sun with at least PF 50

Sorry to hear but glad they are getting in front of it before it becomes something worse. Check out the Titleist Breezer Bucket hats once you get back out there.

I concur. I've contacted Stage IV metastatic melanoma from the top of my head, which is always under my hat. Sunscreen is my friend!

thanks for the reminder. A friend coerced me into wearing hats instead of having them "protect" my 5-iron. Now, i wear them regularly along with sunscreen.

I also get annual visits with the dermatologist (who's a member of my club) and he tells me that i have great skin for someone who golfs, bikes, etc.

I do remind friends to NOT wear the visors

Most definitely keep the sunscreen on! I had to have melanoma cut out of my face several years ago and have been all about sunscreen ever since. Hope you heal up fast and get back out there soon!

My dermatologist is all over me too. A fee pre-cancerous spots scraped off on my ears. Joining the bucket hat brigade now. I also been wearing UPF 50 sleeves. The sleeves are a game changer. No sunscreen residue and they actually have a cooling effect in the heat.

    Good post, very relevant topic.

I wear the FJ Performance Sun Sleeves for Golf offers 50+ UPF protection from the sun while wicking moisture to keep you cool and dry. Also use them on the cool mornings versus wearing another layer under my FJ polo with a light vest. Awesome sleeves and come in three colors, white, grey and black.
  12. Great advice! I worked at my golf course for almost 30 years. And play as much as possible. For that, I've had over 20 skin cancer surgeries. With probably 20 more to go still. My face, arms, back, ears, neck, not to mention my legs. They were the worst. My legs look like I was attacked by a great white. My chin was literally rebuilt. It had melanoma. That was over 400 stiches. So yes ,please wear Sunscreen!! I've posted on here over the years just that. And reminders are always a good thing. If just one person listens it's so worth the post. Thumbs up!!
    Play Well,

I religiously apply sunscreen. My best friend’s dad died a few years ago from melanoma on his head that spread to the rest of his body. Anywhere exposed to sunlight is crucial to apply. And don’t forget to get your ears!

Yup, had melanoma on my back, wearing sleeveless shirts and thinking i got everything only to realized i missed a lot. Now i always wear the same brand as a lot of LPGA golfers do underneath and put sunscreen on also everywhere else. As a fan of Jimmy Buffett, who lived his life outside, gotta protect yourself, Sun is only getting hotter.

My wife is on me to always wear sunscreen. Now with skin cancer being a big problem with outdoor enthusiasts, I put it on my face, arms, neck and ears. Better to be protected than sorry.

Living in FL, I apply, apply and apply. If it's not covered by a clothing item, I apply.

Thank to everyone who has replied with their stories. I apply SPF30 every time I play and reapply at the turn, wear bucket hats, and sun sleeves or long sleeves. I've had just a few spots frozen off my face and I don't want to disappoint my dermatologist by showing up at my next appointment with a worse condition!
Fair skin and North Carolina do not mix well.
