Question for TT. I have an 18 month old son. Obviously he’s still so young and I don’t want to force him into golf. I want him to decide what he wants to do…but a little part of me would love to tee it up with him and go to places like pinehurst as a father son trip. Any recommendations on when and how to introduce him to golf. When I use the net at home he always wants a club and put the ball on the tee. I just want to introduce him to golf without like forcing him into it…you know?

My wife and I are golfers and fortunately, our kids also play golf. Our kids enjoy playing the game to varying degrees and we introduced them as early as we could get a club in their hands. Our kids are young adults now and when they were kids, we got them involved with different programs like US Kids and First Tee and they were a good place to start.

If you see your child is really taking to game, then I would recommend looking for a good golf teacher. In the meantime, enjoy your time with him and bring him out to the range with you.

Join a club that has a good youth program and does not mind toddlers hanging around the practice areas. Start them out with a putter and find things to keep them occupied while you practice. Don't underestimate the power of them wanting to do what dad does. Plastic golf toys in the house works too. Hopefully your wife is on board too. Just let it move at a natural pace. As they get older they will either gravitate towards it or away from it. Hopefully they will enjoy it enough to move into your club's youth programs and maybe Drive, Pitch, and Putt. Best wishes.

I was in the same boat last year. My wife and I took our little guy out to the course and on the cart with us from the time he was 6 months old. Then for christmas, his grandma and grandpa bought him a set of plastic clubs. We live in an area where we are lucky to be able to play from May to September. All winter long he was hitting plastic balls around the house. That is a great place to start. I was able to find a size 0 kids club for him and he started hitting that around the yard and when we took him to the course. Like was previously said, there is a great power in the kiddos to do what dad is doing. I would suggest getting him out there with you. Golf has always been the best game but, there really is nothing better than being out there with the kids.
