    Good afternoon all,

I was swinging my 5 iron a par 3 over the weekend and the shaft completely cracked inside the grip about 3 inches down. I just had the clubs reshafted with Aerotech Steelfiber i80 cw's back in February, but I had a 1/2 inch extension put in and I feel that may have played a role. It has me questioning whether I should do the extension again, any thoughts?

On a side note, I am sure it is under warranty, but I was too impatient to mail it back and wait for it to be inspected so late in the golf season, so I just ordered another one.

My thought is a single shaft piece is much better than a shaft with an extension. I couldn't give you the scientific reason why I think that way...just makes sense.

Wow, i've seen that happen 1 other time to a player I coached on my HS team. The shaft actually cut his hand. They should definitely replace it, Good luck!

Most likely a defect in the shaft. It happens. A 1/2" extension would not cause it to break at that point.

Did Titleist put the extenders in the shafts for you? Most extenders I have had were aftermarket, when I purchased a used set of irons. I would take it back to who did it if it was not by Titleist and let them handle it. Could take a few minutes to repair. All my irons are 1/2 over and do not have extenders, I order them that way from Titleist.

I agree with Abdon. Go with a longer shaft and eliminate the extension. Most club fitters recommend not using extension/plugs in any club you swing at full speed most of the time.
  7. No extensions! As a tall guy, I have always played longer than average clubs...first, extensions degrade the bend profile in the butt section of the shaft affecting the performance of the shaft. Second, for the reason you pointed out with breakage, things happen that you don't expect!

I would say the extension is an issue IF the shaft broke at that point, but it looks much lower where it's stil an one piece shaft. I would expect this to fall under a warranty, but you never know with any "fine print"

What does the shaft look like under the grip. I had a shaft break inside the grip before. When I removed the grip I found a small dent in the shaft that caused the weak spot. I was in HS at the time and I'm guessing I got mad and hit it on something. Since it was under the grip I couldn't see the damage until it broke.

100% the reason why. It’s a very common weak spot when adding an extension to anything. Golf club/hockey stick. The shafts are specifically designed for specific flex points, creating controlled microscopic flex at designated spots. When an extension is put in, it’s glued or epoxied into place, that is a stress point. I wouldn’t do it. I can not stress it enough, go get fitted. (Not from club champion). We all spend a lot of money and thought on this addiction. I dropped my handicap by 5 strokes after getting fitted and my clubs were .5” too long. I don’t hit fat shots anymore. Good luck!

Ohhhh and you’re from Charlotte? Hit up Garrett Todd (Titleist fitter from Charlotte). He did mine and he’s awesome.
  12. Where the shaft broke, was it at the end of where the extension is inside the shaft?
If so, possibly used the wrong taper insert?
Theoretically, the weakest part of the shaft should be at the point where the extension meets the handle of the shaft, up near the top..

    Good day all,

I did use a certified Titleist fitter when I ordered my CNCPT CP04s and he fitted me for the Steelfibers. I had the grips installed at Dicks, but had them add an extension for an extra couple yards. Glad the shaft did not go through the grip, a buddy from high school had that happen and he had severe lacerations that required multiple stitches. Not sure if it was the extension or not, but my claim was approved, and since I had already paid for the new shaft, the company refunded me for the amount I paid.

    Thanks all for your responses.
