Does altering the grind/bounce on SM7 effect full shots

  1. With the introduction of the SM8 I have recently taken advantage of special discounts on SM7 to bag myself a special order 54* and 58* with Recoil 95 F4 shafts. The are replacing miz S5 and an old favourite png glide SW. Other than miz irons (have Recoil shafts) I use Titleist through the bag. Titleist fitter could not offer me a wedge fitting with Recoil shafts so we decided on a 54.08M and also 58.08M. They look great and I am delighted with them but have one question. I like to lay the 58* LW open, even very open, for some flop shots around the green turning it into a 60 or more when needed and decided on the M grind for that reason. It works great when there is a decent bit of grass under the ball but when the lie is tight or bare the heal is bouncing the leading edge into the ball with nasty results. My question is if I grind some metal off the heal of the club so the heal (only) sits a bit more flush with the ground when layed open (I have done this with my wedges before) would that alter the feel or flight of the ball when played with a full or half swing with the SM7? Thanks in advance for any advice.

  2. I guess my question is - why? 58* should provide more than enough loft for nearly every situation and for those times when you want to lay it open further you shouldn't need to go to extremes to get the loft you need. Slightly open with a little more out to in path should be just fine without worrying about shaving down the grind. The M grind already allows for the flexibility to open the face more. If you play on hardpan, I would go for the 60 L or opt for the 62 M. The more square you keep the clubface the more consistent you will be, slightly open is ok at times, but if you are bouncing the back of the sole i would try some different techniques first.

Bill, if you've ground the heel down on other wedges before, you may have answered your own question. That said,I've never taken a wedge and further shaved the grind down, but I would think it would affect full, square faced shots. If you grind the heel down further, isn't there a possibility the heel would dig in, thus closing the toe leading to pulled shots? I have a 58.08M, and love to lay it open to hit the shots around the green, you just described. For me, the grind is perfect for all kinds of shots, including full square faced shots. If I happen to need to open the face with a really tight lie, I only open it slightly, and move my hands a little ahead, trying to ensure the leading edge is as flush with the ground as possible.

Doesn't really matter what we think. Price point on SM7 pretty low right now so grind away. If you mess it up too bad just get another one. Some people like to tinker, others don't. Ultimately up to you, especially since you said you have done it in the past. Know that you will void any warranty claim on that club. Have fun.
